Since the announcement of my Nobel Prize in Physics in October, I have given several dozen interviews and there is one question people ask more than any other: how can we get more girls in “Stem” (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? These fields are historically male-dominated. We rely on Stem disciplines, and the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills they develop, to help address some of the most pressing challenges the world faces. By encouraging girls and women to enter these fields, we create diversity in a growing talent pool, which brings with it fresh perspectives and different voices. Imbalance serves no one.

That’s not to say we should insist that all girls seek careers in engineering, or computer science or astrophysics. And not every boy either. That intense focus would create a whole other imbalance. I would like to see gender equity in all fields. It is our responsibility to expose our children to as many career options as possible so they can make informed choices. We should encourage them to play to their strengths. The world works best when we all do what we’re good at.

① astrophysics /æstrə(ʊ)'fɪzɪks/ n.

The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics.

Growing up, my mom and dad, an English teacher and an engineer, often took my siblings and me on educational family outings. One of those trips changed my life. It was at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto where I saw my first laser. My dad said, “Donna, this is the future.” I was about 10 years old. It was love at first sight. My work with lasers as a PhD student at the University of Rochester eventually won me the Nobel Prize.

② siblings /'sibliŋz/ n.

Communicate with your spouse, siblings, or friends in this time about what you’re going through.

While my parents were always encouraging, there were some adults in my life who were not. I excelled at maths and science from an early age, at a time when the pervasive attitude was that they were “boys’ subjects”. A teacher said those very words to me.

③ pervasive /pə'veɪsɪv/ adj.

"The same argument is still pervasive in our school community, " he says.

In fact, the times I experienced bias or received sexist comments — there really haven’t been many — I didn’t take them to heart. Almost all the men I knew in university were supportive and treated me like an equal. There was the odd exception. One guy said he wanted to punch me because I finished a maths test early when he was nowhere near done. I just thought that was a ridiculous thing to say. That’s my personality. I appreciate that not everyone reacts the same way.

I didn’t have a single female professor at graduate school in the mid-1980s. I had few female classmates too. My sister had a similar experience in her engineering studies at a different university. Thankfully, the picture is changing. But our work is far from done.

The University of Waterloo, where I teach physics and conduct laser research, is the only Canadian university to take a leadership role in the HeForShe initiative. The UN’s gender-equity programme has a goal of removing the barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential and, along with boys and men, improving our society.

Waterloo’s reputation for excellence in Stem programmes made it a natural fit for HeForShe and the university was the first Canadian organisation to join back in 2015. Its Faculty of Engineering is the largest engineering school in Canada. This academic year saw its highest proportion of female enrolment among first-year engineering students (slightly more than 30 per cent). In Canada, 13.1 per cent of people working in engineering and engineering technology are women.

Having more women in Stem inevitably creates more role models in those areas for girls to look up to, and the cycle continues. Since my Nobel Prize, I have heard from so many young women and girls who say that they feel inspired to pursue science education or careers in Stem fields. I am pleased to hear it. For all of us.
