主要内容为：美国政府停摆，印尼海啸，美军撤离叙利亚。
第一个新闻：美国政府停摆。
上周新闻提到美国政府要关门，那今天早上还是处于部分关停的状态。很多员工受到影响。
About 800,000 federal workers have been impacted by this.
关门的原因还是特朗普想要5 billion来建墙，那结果就是380,000员工在暂时休假，420,000员工在没有工资地工作。‘380,000 federal employees are on furlough and another 420,000 are working without pay.’ 这里面on furlough就是暂时休假状态。这种状态有可能持续到一月份， ‘stretch into January.’
虽然议员门在商讨，但情况并不是很乐观（optimistic）。 ‘It doesn’t seem like they’re making much progress at this point.’ 双方就预算上没有达成一致，更重要的民进党坚决不同意给一分钱在修墙的问题上。‘But the main holdup is what the money will be spent on. At this point, Democrats are saying they won’t give any money for a wall, steel slats, fence. Any type of barrier, whatever you call it, they don’t want it. ’ 这句里，the main holdup就是指主要矛盾的意思。steel slats 就是那铁栅栏似的。
目前华盛顿特区比较不稳定，有高层因为撤军问题在辞职，所以会有不少的新面孔来处理些非常重要的事。’And so you’re going to have a lot of the administration that’s going to be without permanent leadership and kind of _in limbo.’_ 这里面 in limbo 是表示不稳定的状态。
另外特朗普政权还在和好几个银行巨头谈话，似乎是向他们保证(reassure)特朗普不会解雇美联储主度(Fed chairman)。不过特朗普之前说过银行方面会有一些变化，’he said that he was assured that there was plenty of liquidity for banks’
第二个新闻关于印尼的海啸。
Tsunami 海啸， 这次的海啸是由火山活动导致的水下板块的移动所造成。‘the tsunami was triggered by underwater landslides that were caused by volcanic activity.’
第一批死者已经下葬了，‘the first casualties of the tsunami had their funerals and were buried today.’ Casualty 表示伤亡数，受害方。在灾难新闻里面经常会遇到。印尼总统坐飞机抵达灾难现场访问了受伤群众，同时也来指导救援（to direct rescue efforts）.国际发出了吊唁 (sent their condolences to XXX) 并提供相关帮助。
更严重的是专家说后续还有可能有灾难，所以大家要远离海滩（‘they need to stay inland on high ground and away from the beaches’），这种火山引发的板块影动比地震更致命，因为很难察觉到。
’it is really a cataclysmic event. You just see massive plumes of smoke and lava.‘ plume是羽毛的意思，lava 是熔岩的意思。印尼的地震活动监测并不好使，人们也发现了印尼对此十分脆弱并且准备不充分。’Indonesia is extremely vulnerable and poorly prepared to deal with such things in future.‘
现在，一些应急小组已经能够抵达受灾区域（have been able to reach impacted communities so far）。虽然印尼是个群岛国家，不过这次受灾地区离两个主岛并不远，所以救援相对及时。军队也被派上搜寻生还者。’The military’s been mobilized to look for survivors and distribute aid.‘ 不少受难者是来旅行的，因为政府想把这里建成一个新的景点来与巴厘岛竞争。’has tried to turn the western tip of Java into a new tourist destination to rival the island of Bali.‘ 这里面rival是竞争的意思。
第三个新闻关于美军撤军叙利亚。
美军会慢慢撤离，winding down their mission. 当地群众感觉自己被被判了（they feel betrayed）.美军在那是一个很强的威摄作用，’They’re these sprawling complexes with mud bank defenses and watchtowers.‘ Sprawling complexes杂乱无序的扩展着的建筑群，complex更常用的意思是复杂的，这里用作名词表示那筑群和一系列相关的东西。
当地群众觉得ISIS并未被打败，但美军却中途撤离。reeling in shock 还在懵逼中，reel有卷轴，圈筒的意思，这里表示眩晕。连盟军都是从电视上得知美军要撤离的消息，美军撤离后，当地的反恐部队可能也要转移下战场，所以对抗ISIS会止步，而土耳其有可以趁虚而入。’the Turkish government sounds ready to go after these Kurdish militias now if there’s a vacuum’
