Self-consistence of Light and Darkness

The group of paintings Landscape-Neverland is full of unprecedented ambition.

On a light-hunting trip in Norway ten years ago, Sun Yao missed the aurora, but perceived darkness, an absolute darkness. The sky wrapped in gloom is like a floating cloud almost all the time, just like a black hole that reveals secrets, or a mother's womb - violent but gentle. The endless night has aroused himself thousands of thoughts, what is darkness? What is light? What is the connection between black and white? And what is painting?

The 42-metre-wide paintings,surrounds to form the heterogeneous space, luring the viewer into it, and some kind of immersive meditation approaching the supremacy occurs. Where is it in the black-and-white pureness? Is Neverland like Peter Pan ever existed? Everything looks peaceful but also incurs deeper danger. Through the ancient means of painting, Sun Yao combines it with the theatre experience of flowing digital image to form such a space that always embraces the viewers in which time goes on indefinitely.

The persistent family’s continued illness and the time spent in the hospital have made Sun Yao reform the perception of life and death, that is, from confrontation to self-consistency. Black and white are entangled in the Landscape-Neverland paintings, which seems to be a war, or the war never begins.


光与暗的自洽

这一「无地」组画,充盈着前所未有的野心。

十年前的一次挪威捕光之行,孙尧错失了极光,却感知到了黑暗,一种绝对黑暗。黑暗包裹的夜空,似是微云浮动,抑或吐露秘密的黑洞,又仿佛母亲的子宫——狂暴却温柔。无尽黑夜,引来了万千思绪,何为暗?何为光?什么是黑?什么是白?而绘画又是什么?

42米的巨幅,环绕成异质空间,将观者诱入其中,某种没入式的至上沉思发生了。在黑白交织的纯粹中,该身处何地?是否有如彼得·潘所述的永无岛?一切平和却又危机四伏。通过绘画这一古老的手段,孙尧将之与当代数字流动式剧场体验相结合,时间在其中无始无终,往返其间,一直拥抱观者。

家人的持续病重,医院驻留的所见,令孙尧重塑了对于生死的价值观,即从对抗走向自洽。在「无地」组画中,黑与白纠缠其间,似乎是一场战争,但抑或,战争从未开始。
