Why would Secondary sources be useful and not useful - a PEE study

Why would Schindler’s List be a useful source for studying about the Holocaust?

The film ‘Schindler’s List’ would be a useful source because it would show how the person interpreted the source and their own opinion on the event.

Many secondary sources are considered to be not clear and sometimes are made up for convenience sake. But most times those parts are representations of the directors opinion and how they interpreted the information. Persona opinions and different outlooks on things are very valuable to academic writing as we can critique the information and understand the piece better.

Having different opinions on a certain event or subject will widen your field of thinking and cause you to realise new and different things. This is why a secondary source like, ‘Schindler’s List’ would be a useful source for studying about the Holocaust.

Why wouldn’t Schindler’s List be a useful source for studying about the Holocaust?

‘Schindler’s List’, a film about a German businessman during WW2 isn’t a useful source for academic information because the movie is a secondary source and because of that the primary information could be obscured for public movie entertainment or scenery violences.

Many movie producing companies restrict extremely violent material and WW2 was no exception. Most countries, including New Zealand, have set Offensive Regulation Acts for movie contents.

WW2 was an excruciating time for the Jewish religion and having modern movie directors reenact the experience would be offensive to current Jewish population and could bring back some sad memories. Some scenes of the actual event also could be tedious and consume precious time on the movie screen for the more key points of the film. Another point is that the basic moral of a movie is to entertain or inform viewers about certain events or a story.

If movie directors don’t focus on the areas rich with information or add a bit of their own flavour to it, then they have broken the basic purpose of a movie, to entertain or inform the viewers.

The film ‘Schindler’s List’ wouldn’t be a useful source for studying the Holocaust because it’s a secondary source that can be unreliable due to present day film regulations and basic movie entertainment morals.
