That means to make the wrong choice; to ask the wrong person; to follow the wrong course. (Alludes to a dog in pursuit of an animal, where the animal is in one tree and the dog is barking at another tree.) The man left with the owner.

Then the girls continued to eat the lemon tarts made by Amelia. After a while the owner pulled up again, which means go to haul up. This time a woman who had wanted to buy the lot for her restaurant came with him. When she knew from the girls that there was a restaurant selling the delicious tarts nearby and the people living around there liked to have dinner there, she gave up her plan too.

Eventually a man decided to buy the lot and turn it to a parking lot, although the girls told him the people living there didn't need a parking lot.
