 “rival”是名词也是动词。作为名词表示“竞争者”“对手”，作为动词表示“能与…媲美”“与…匹敌”，今天我们要学习的是它的动词用法。当我们描述一个事物或者比较两件事物时，想表示“不亚于”“与…不分高低”，就可以用到 rival。

比如去年我们在昆山杜克大学做过一次阅读马拉松。参观学校时发现学习环境、设施、服务都特别好，可以和五星级酒店相媲美。想用英文表达这个意思就可以说：

我们常用“难以望其项背”表示难以企及某人所达到的成就或境界，这是也可以用 rival 来表示，比如：
