F8 Breakout Sessions – Highlights and Links to Videos

Today at F8 we had some exciting panel sessions and events and for those of you who couldn’t be there live we wanted to share an overview of all that was shared and links to video recordings of the sessions. These sessions followed the launch of new Messenger products to help businesses and developers connect with the 1.3 billion people that depend on Messenger every day. Here are the highlights from today’s sessions:

Building Great Experiences with Messenger Session

This session was led by Technical Program Manager Vivien Tong and Software Engineers Nagendra Kumar and Abby He. They shared examples and best practices on how to build great Messenger experiences, differentiate, get your experiences discovered and grow your business with some of the tools the platform provides:

Nagendra kicked off the session discussing basic building blocks developers can use to create a more engaging experience, highlighting the generic template, the persistent menu, quick replies and the webview. Then, Vivien discussed how businesses can create experiences that are relevant, personalized and seamless. She covered built-in NLP, the Profile API,

contact info quick replies, account linking and the handover protocol. Finally, Abby took the stage to discuss how to drive discovery and growth for your Messenger experience, doing a deep-dive into the customer chat plugin.

Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to Enhance Your Conversations Session

This session was led by Software Engineers Anthony Kesich and Julien Odent and covered how businesses and developers can use NLP to enhance conversations with customers and drive business outcomes.

Anthony began the session by discussing M, your helpful assistant in Messenger, powered by artificial intelligence. He introduced M translations, sharing that now when people connected through Marketplace receive a message in a language that is different from their default language in Messenger, M will ask them if they want to translate the message. He then did a technical deep-dive, explaining the technology that powers M suggestions. Julien Odent discussed our newly announced integration for Built-in NLP and the Page Inbox, and then gave the audience a closer look into how they can incorporate NLP into their own Messenger experiences.

Augmenting Brand Experiences on Messenger Session

This session was led by Product Manager Heath Black and Head of Design Loredana Crisan. During the session, they discussed the newly released AR camera effects for Messenger Platform which allows businesses and brands to integrate a full spectrum of powerful interactive and augmented reality (AR) effects into their Messenger experiences. Heath provided a historical look at the evolution of our platform, explaining how AR is the next step for brands looking to marry the virtual and physical shopping experiences. Then Loredana discussed design best practices, explaining that the best AR experiences are ones that reflect real life, integrate movement, spark conversation and go beyond the camera.

Messenger for Business Session

Led by Stefanos Loukakos, Head of Messenger Business and Clare Rubin, Product Manager for Monetization in Messenger, this session covered the different ways businesses can use both organic and paid options to create great experiences and drive customers to them. Messenger ads and Click-to-Messenger ads can drive discovery for Messenger experiences, and Sponsored Messages can re-engage customers and keep the conversation going.

Ted Helwick, Messenger’s Head of Monetization, led this dynamic panel discussion with:

Robert Gary, Head of Product at T-Mobile

Rob LoCasio, CEO of LivePerson

Addie Conner, Chief Innovation Officer and Partner at Decoded Advertising.

The discussion covered how T-Mobile, their Platform Development Provider (LivePerson) and creative agency (Decoded) built a successful Messenger experience by investing in the platform and paid media to drive business outcomes.
