XenClient – Fast Forward

Today, Citrix announced the acquisition of Virtual Computer, who is joining forces with us to build the industry’s best client virtualization solution.

It’s an exciting time for us.  In adding the Virtual Computer team to the existing XenClient team, we’re joining together the world’s top two client hypervisor engineering teams.   We’re also combining the elegance of a system designed for the management of the laptop lifecycle with the power of the Citrix desktop virtualization and cloud portfolio.  So it’s going to be a great combination of engineers, architects, and products.

Mostly, however, this event is about finding ways to go faster for you, our customers.

Virtual Computer and Citrix shared a vision for how client virtualization(Desktop virtualization的马甲) could simplify how IT manages and secures laptops in the enterprise(管到这来了).  We’d both been building technologies and solutions that had massive customer interest and initial success, and we both knew that to succeed our customers and partners wanted us to move faster.

Our customers are asking for more scalable centralized management capabilities for simple enterprise wide deployment, advanced policy and security controls, and automated backup and recovery.  This acquisition helps us deliver this faster.

They’re also asking for greater integration between XenClient and XenDesktop, and the addition of the Virtual Computer team will accelerate our work there, too.

In combining the best of XenClient and Virtual Computer’s NxTop, we announced the new XenClient Enterprise edition at Synergy.  It’s going to be exciting to see our customers take advantage of these new capabilities to deliver virtual desktops to 100% of their users.  To get started, here are a couple of things to do now:

NxTop

Better End User Performance Than Server-Hosted VDI

NxTop offers the same benefits as traditional server-hosted VDI, only the virtualized desktops run securely on the client.  This results in better end user performance, because the virtual desktop is executing locally, so it works and feels like a native PC.  And for laptop users, this delivers an added benefit, because they can use their desktop equally well whether they are on the LAN, a poor network connection, or no network at all. With NxTop, organizations big and small can move to a virtual desktop environment—using existing PCs—with minimal infrastructure costs and no compromise on end user performance.

Citrix has built an incredible track record of adding teams like Virtual Computer into the family – teams that fit the culture, that share a vision, and that quickly become stewards of the Citrix mission.  That can only happen when we spend a lot of effort to ensure we’re adding the right team of people.

Having gotten to know the leadership and many members of the Virtual Computer team well, I couldn’t be more excited to have them join the Citrix team.  It’s going to be great to see what we can do as one team.

Congratulations to Dan McCall and team, and welcome aboard.  It’s going to be a fun, and fast, ride.
