In recent years, modern technology has dramatically changed the way people communicate through writing, so an increasing number of individuals do not see the value in teaching handwriting to children. Therefore, some assume that there is no need to teach kids the skill of handwriting. As for me, I totally disapprove of the above standpoint.

First and foremost, legible writing is of great importance when assessments are based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations. Without fast and clear handwriting, a student may miss out on vital learning opportunities. More importantly, children who write quickly and clearly are more likely to express their thoughts through words. They can learn better when working with new ideas through handwriting instead of typing.

Furthermore, in spite of the ubiquity of tablets and computers, scientific research suggests that handwriting is a critical skill that facilitates children’s growth in other areas of intellectual development. In a sense, children are able to use their minds in a flexible and creative way while they are learning the skill of handwriting. Besides, studies indicate that writing also improves memory.

In addition, handwriting is a very complex skill that involves language, cognition, perception and movement, all of which have to be coordinated into a whole because the motion of handwriting activates a special neurological circuit in the brain. The brain engages differently when one writes something by hand as opposed to typing it on a keyboard or by touching a screen. Actually, handwriting not only stimulates visual perceptual skills and executive functioning skills but also promotes abilities of eye-hand coordination and speech organization.

Despite the widespread use of computers for writing, the skill of handwriting remains essential in today’s world. Skilled, fluid handwriting is an asset to learning; as a consequence, it is necessary to teach children the skill of handwriting.
