Do you get the words fun and funny confused? Many people that are learning English use the words ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ incorrectly because they don’t understand the difference. Once you understand the difference you should be able to use them correctly. Below you will find the definitions of both words and example sentences.

Fun

Definition:Something or someone that is enjoyable or entertaining

Funny

Definition:Something or someone that makes you laugh or is humorous

Example Sentences

Fun

1. I had a lot offunat David’s birthday party.

2. Maria said she hasfunwhen she visited her aunt.

3. The Peterson’s are suchfunpeople.

4. The meeting at work was informative andfun.

5. The boy hadfunplaying the games he got for his birthday.

6. This isfun!

Funny

1. The new Jim Carey movie is reallyfunny.

2. The clown at the circus wasfunny. He knew lots of tricks.

3. My brother is afunnyguy. He always makes me laugh.

4. James told me afunnyjoke.

5. Marisa told me afunnystory about what happened to her at work.

6. That was sofunny!

Negative Example Sentences with Fun and Funny

Fun

1. I didn’t havefunat school today.

2. Kelsey never seems to havefun.

3. The party was so boring. No one had anyfun.

4. It’s notfunto be sick.

Funny

1. My professor thinks he isfunnybut he’s not.

2. The movie wasn’tfunnythough it was supposed to be a comedy.

3. That’s notfunny! Stop it.

4. It wasn’tfunnywhen I tripped and feel at work. I really hurt myself.

Can I use both words in the same sentence?Yes… but it is not very common.
