How Has “Hello Kitty” Conquered the World

As the feline turns 40 she’s more powerful than ever. But how did she become a brand worth $ 7bn?

After Japan, Singapore was the first to suffer an outbreak. In 2000, a shortage of toys displaying the beloved cat at one of the city’s McDonald’s restaurants led to the unleashing of darker, violent instincts when a riot ensued. Seven people were injured and three taken to hospital for treatment. That was just the beginning.

Now, what is left of our species, children and adults alike, have succumbed, making ‘Hello Kitty’ one of the most recognizable graphics on Earth. Hello Kitty turns 40 this autumn, and we can now see that she was the Trojan Horse that led to the global domination of Japanese ‘cute culture’. From Marrakech to Honolulu, the ubiquitous red-ribboned cat now stands top-tier in any toy display. Googling Mickey Mouse reaps about 2.3 million results. Search Hello Kitty, however, and you’ll find the kitten, which is basically just a narrative-free, trademarked drawing, garners 10 million more.

　　如今，我们这些还生活在世上的人类，不论大人还是小孩，都已被凯蒂猫征服，它成为全世界知名度最高的动画形象之一。今年秋天，凯蒂猫就满40岁了，我们现在才发现她就像特洛伊木马一样，让日本的“可爱文化”一统天下。从马拉喀什到火奴鲁鲁，这只头戴红色蝴蝶结的小猫咪无处不在，而且在任何玩具展览中都摆在最显眼的位置。在谷歌搜索“米奇老鼠”，会有大约230万条结果。不过，如果搜索“凯蒂猫”，你会发现她的搜索结果比“米奇老鼠”多出一千万条，尽管这只小猫基本上只是个无文字说明的商标图案。

It’s not always rudeness or scatter-brained behaviour – it can be something much deeper.

Confession: I am a late person. At least, one in recovery. In fact, I’ve repeatedly, and embarrassingly, missed the deadline for this article. I’d love to pretend this is some journalistic form of ‘method’ acting. It is not.?

I know I’m not alone. We all know that person: there’s the child minder who is always late, the colleague who misses every deadline, even if just by a few hours, the friend you must tell to arrive 30 minutes earlier than she needs to for your lunch reservation.
