So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are becoming increasingly less independent on specialized labor. No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for their countless do-it-yourself publications. Shops cater for the do-it-yourself craze not only by running special services for novices, but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble at home. Such things provide an excellent outlet for pent-up creative energy, but unfortunately not all of us are born handymen. Some men who though hardly drive a snail in straight are supposed by their wives to be born handymen and fix anything. The worst thing about the do-it-yourself game is that sometimes even men live under the illusion that they can do anything, even when they are have repeatedly been proved them wrong. It is a question of pride as anything else. The story of our broken lawn mower dramatically illustrated how men prided on theirselves. Though my wife suggest that I call in a man to look at our lawn mower, I insisted that I fix it myself. One Saturday afternoon, I got round to the machine and consided it to be a simple job. After my minor ajustment to the mower, I was unable to get the mower working, so I decided to dismantle it. Though I found out that one of the links in the chain that drives the wheels that had snapped and therefore bought a new chain, I was unable to have the mower reassembled for the the simple reason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which did not seem to fit anywhere. As a result, the law mower gets rusting and the grass grew so wild that it surrounded our hourse completely.
