Reflections on the English Lesson of Weather in Grade Four

    On Apr. 10th, I had a demonstration class in Grade 4. The teaching content is Read and write in Part B in Unit 3.

    Before, I inclined to choose the part of Let’s learn or Let’s talk, because it is easier for students to grasp, it is more interesting for them through various teaching games, and the atmosphere in class is more active. Above all, it is easy for me to prepare the teaching materials. This time, I changed my mind and I choose the part of Read and write instead. It’s about a postcard written by John’s father in Sydney to John in China. It’s about weather, aiming to let students know how to describe weather and use simple questions. The content is a little difficult not only for the students to learn but also for me to prepare. I want to challenge something new and something more difficult. If so, I will be able to learn new teaching methods or gain new teaching experience through my process of preparation for the teaching materials. I spared no efforts to make the powerpoint and used my head to create something novel. I searched for the internet for the English songs about the topic of weather in order to stimulate students’ interest. I designed a micro-lecture for lead-in. Lead-in is a part for us to use what we learned to present the new. After the presentation, I designed questions for students to help understand the postcard. At last, I designed two tasks to consolidate what they’ve learned.

    Though the students in Grade 4 were not so active or competent, they could understand my oral English through all the class with the help of my powerpoint and my gestures. Above all, this class was successfully recorded.
