explanation: to appear suddenly in large numbers.

e.g. Office blocks are sprouting up everywhere.

2.summon

As for the personal physician, that's the man or woman summoned to the dressing room if a stricken actress so she won't have to be treated by the impersonal physician assigned to the theater.(p13)

explanation: to order someone to come to a place

e.g.He was summoned to attend an emergency meeting.

3.go belly up

Companies that go belly-up have a "negative cash-flow position." (P14)

explantion: (informal) if a business or company goes belly up, it stops operating because it cannot pay its debts. 破产

4.harbor

As for any worries that the public might harbor...(p14)

explanation: to keep bad thoughts, fears, or hopes in your mind for a long time

e.g. I think he's harbouring some sort of grudge against me.

5.grapple with

...before they have grappled with the discipline of assessing a work on its merits and on external sources.(p21)..

explanation: to try hard to deal with or understand something difficult; to fight or struggle with someone, holding them tightly

e.g. The government has to grapple with the problem of unemployment.

6.go out on a limb

Americans are unwilling to go out on a limb.(p22)

explanation: take a risk

e.g. He'd gone out on a limb to help us.
