When it comes to developing imagination and language skills, some hold that people who read books can develop more imagination and language skills than those who prefer to watch TV. As for me, I stand up for this argument. Reading the fertile body of work can stimulate individuals’ imagination and boost their language skills.

While people are absorbed in reading novels, they are more likely to be immersed in the new world and full of earnest anticipation to the plots. They dream about possible endings of the novels with unlimited imagination. In one sense, reading sharpens individuals’ imagination skills. By contrast, watching TV numbs individuals’ mind as it prevents viewers from being intellectually challenged, thinking analytically, and using their imagination because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on TV. To make matters worse, according to a research, too much watching TV as adults, especially when combined with not much exercise, may be linked to lower brain functioning.

Another advantage of reading lies in its contribution to the improvement of individuals’ language skills. Exactly speaking, reading may have a lasting impact on readers’ language skills, which not only expands the circumference of their cognitive inputs but also endows them with constant stream of surprises. It can be said that reading is the secret cornerstone of language skills. For those who like reading books, they needn’t search the heavens for proper words or sentences during their communication with others because they have been equipped with adequate language skills. Compared with those who enjoy reading books, more alarmingly, TV viewers have trouble in talking with others. Those who are addicted to watching TV and unwilling to read may find that their language skills are declining.

In conclusion, reading books is more beneficial for cultivating individuals’ imagination and language skills than watching TV.  (308 words)
