Lesson 59 In or out?

Our dog, Rex, used to sit outside our front gate and bark. Every time he wanted to come into the garden he would bark until someone opened the gate. As the neighbors complained of the noise, my husband spent weeks training him to press his paw on the latch to let himself in. Rex soon became an expert at opening the gate. However, when I was going out shopping last week, I noticed him in the garden near the gate. This time he was barking so that someone would let him out! Since then, he has developed another bad habit. As soon as he opens the gate from outside, he comes into the garden and waits until the gate shuts. Then he sits and barks until someone lets him out. After this he immediately lets himself in and begins barking again. Yesterday my husband removed the gate and Rex got so annoyed we have not seen him since.

I only do it out of habit.

force of habit

if you do sth from or out of force of habit, you do it automatically and in a particular way because you have always done it that way in the past 习惯力量

Whenever I walk by her building I look up at her window from sheer force of habit.

I'm a creature of habit. (= I have a fixed and regular way of doing things.)

She's tried to give up smoking but just can't kick/break the habit.

not in the habit of doing sth.

old habits die hard.

have the habit of doing sth.

get into the habit of doing sth.

(造句)I don't know since when I got into the habit of holding my husband's hand while sleep, otherwise, I would be hard to fall asleep.

顺便查下sleep

If you're tired, you probably need to sleepso lie down and close your eyes. When you wake up, you'll feel much better.

Everyone needs sleep and most of us get some at least once a day. Maybe that's why sleep is used in so many expressions. If you “sleep on it” you'll wait to make a decision until tomorrow. If you “sleep over,” you stay at someone's place for the night. A person who “lets sleeping dogs lie” knows when not to stir up trouble. If you slip into eternal sleep, you won't be needing any more naps.

造句2:I didn't get enough sleep last night, I stayed up until midnight.

a long piece of clothing worn by a monk or nun 修道士或者修女穿的长袍;道袍;道服
