单词

• compost
  可作名词，表示肥料，也可作动词，表示把……制成堆肥。
     Cut down and compost spent cucumbers, tomatoes, and other crops...
     将已收获过的黄瓜、西红柿和其他作物的秧蔓割下，制成堆肥。

• peelings
  去除的果蔬皮：Peelings are pieces of skin removed from vegetables and fruit。peel本身既可作名词，也可作动词，表示削皮。
     //...potato peelings.
     土豆皮
     Peel and dice the potatoes.
     给土豆削皮，切块。

• skin
  作名词可表示皮肤，也可表示果皮,(蔬菜的)表皮。
     The outer skin of the orange is called the 'zest'.
     橙子皮称为 zest。

• heap
  既可作名词，表示杂乱的一堆，也可作动词，表示堆放。
     //...a heap of bricks...
     一堆砖
     Mrs. Madrigal heaped more carrots onto Michael's plate.
     马德里加尔夫人将更多的胡萝卜堆到了迈克尔的盘子里。
  拓展一下，短语at the bottom/top of the heap，表示身处底层/高层：
     //...those at the top of the social heap...
     那些身处社会高层的人们

• wiggly
  蠕虫，蚯蚓等。

• orchard
  果园。

• apple core
  core表示核心，要点，也可以表示果核。
     Peel the pears and remove the cores.
     将梨削皮去核。

• ring sb
  复习一下，表示给某人打电话。

• fun run
  非竞赛性长跑，公益长跑，募捐长跑，英文解释为：A fun run is a long-distance race which anyone can take part in. Fun runs are often held to raise money for charity.

• helping
  食物的一份，一客，英文解释为：A helping of food is the amount of it that you get in a single serving.
     She gave them extra helpings of ice cream. *
     她又给了他们几份冰激凌。*

• uphill
  作为副词，可表示上坡，靠山顶，也可作形容词表示荆棘满途的，艰苦卓绝的。
     It had been an uphill struggle to achieve what she had wanted...
     她历尽坎坷才达到目的。
     It's an uphill battle but I think we're going to win.
     虽然这是一场艰苦的斗争，但我相信我们会取得胜利。

• wasp
  复习一下，表示黄蜂，胡蜂。

短语

• talking of ……
  口语中的常用表达，说到……，提及……（用于承接刚才的话题）。类似的表达还有“when it comes to ……”，“in terms of”，
     Talking of Venice, have you seen the masks I bought there last year?
     说到威尼斯，你见到我去年在那儿买的面具了吗？

• high up
  在高处。
     High up among the clouds, we saw the summit of Qomolangma.
     在高高的云团中，我们看到了珠穆朗玛峰的顶峰。

• hold onto
  紧紧抓住，紧紧握住
     She had to hold onto the railings to keep her balance (= to stop herself from falling).
     她必须扶着围栏才能保持平衡。
