捉虫记（三）

在网上常常看到有问题的英文。举例两则。

1. I asked my grandma why your love at that time can last too old.

对应中文：我问姥姥，为什么你们那个时候的爱情可以白头偕老？

last too old 像是机器翻译的结果。白头偕老指夫妻相亲相爱，共同生活到老。两个人白头偕老，而不是爱情白头偕老。

白头偕老的翻译方法有多种，要看语境。从这句话，我揣测作者想说，I asked my grandma why marriages in the old days last so long.

2. Be powerless when my kids need me. Be regretful when I look back.

对应中文：当孩子需要我时无能为力，当我回首岁月，充满遗憾。

祈使句有什么作用？看一下剑桥词典网站的解释：We use imperative clauses when we want to tell someone to do something (most commonly for advice, suggestions, requests, commands, orders or instructions). 提建议、提要求、下命令、给指示灯时候用。

举个iWeb语料库里的例子: Be careful when relying on third-party recommendations. 依赖第三方建议要小心。

Be powerless when my kids need me. Be regretful when I look back. 意思是，孩子需要我的时候，我要无能为力。回首岁月，我要充满遗憾。

虽然没有上下文，我相信，这不是作者想表达的意思。揣测一下，作者想说，When my kids need me, I can’t help them. When I look back, my life is full of regrets.
