“厕所”的英文有几种说法？

提到厕所，大家脑子里估计蹦出来的就是toilet这个词。其实在不同国家、不同场合，厕所的说法是不一样的。而且由于toilet有“马桶”的意思，在美国直接说toilet会被认为不雅，就像我们平时在公共场所喜欢用“洗手间、卫生间”来代替“厕所”一样。
先看下牛津词典上的权威解释，写得很清楚：

In British English the toilet in private houses is called the lavatory, toilet, WC (dated), or loo (informal). In public places it is called the Gents/the Ladies or public conveniences.
In US English it is called the lavatory, toilet or bathroom in private houses and the washroom or rest-room in public buildings.

在英式英语中，私人住宅中的厕所称为lavatory或者toilet，其中lavatory是抽水马桶的意思，或者是放有抽水马桶的房间，在飞机上基本上都是用这个词：

公共场所的厕所称为the Gents/the Ladies或public conveniences，就是大家方便的地方，比较形象。

在美式英语中，私人住宅中的厕所称为lavatory，toilet或bathroom。其中bathroom字面翻译是洗澡间，一般包含浴缸或者淋浴房、马桶以及台盆（washbasin）。
