Expressions

1. That was kind of a bummer, but okay.

bummer: informal, a situation that is disappointing or annoying 令人不愉快的/失望的经历

It was a real bummer being ill on holiday.

2. The Halloween Parade was in full swing down Amesfort Avenue.

be in full swing: if an event or process is in full swing, it has reached its highest level of activity

By midnight, the end-of-course party was in full swing.

get into the swing of it/ things: to become fully involved in an activity

Once we got into the swing of it, it took no time at all.

3. He pointed to his face when he said that and batted his eyes, which made me laugh.

bat: (v.)  （网球/棒球）击球

bat one's eyes/ eyelashes: if a woman bats her eyes, she opens and closes them several times quickly, in order to look attractive to men

not bat an eye/ eyelid: informal, to not seem to be shocked, surprised, or embarrassed

They started talking about sex, but she didn't bat an eyelid.

4. He was such a good sport about himself.

a good sport: 1. someone who does not get angry when they lose at a game or sport

2. a helpful cheerful person who lets you enjoy yourself

Be a (good) sport and lend me your bike,

a bad/ poor sport: someone who gets angry very easily when they lose a game or sport

5. Everyone's Egyptian artifact was displayed on a table with a little caption card explaining what the thing was.
