The work presented in this book is based on the proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The research program of the ATLAS experiment includes the precise measurement of the parameters of the Standard Model, and the search for signals of physics beyond the SM. Both these approaches are pursued in this thesis, which presents two different analyses: the measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the di-photon decay channel, and the search for production of supersymmetric particles (gluinos, squarks or winos) in a final state containing two photons and missing transverse momentum. Finally, ATLAS detector performance studies, which are key ingredients for the two analyses outlined before, are also carried out and described.

Psychoanalysis Meets Psychosisproposes a major revision of the psychoanalytic theory of the most severe mental illnesses including schizophrenia. Freud believed that psychosis is the consequence of a biologically determined inability to attain and sustain a normal or neurotic mental organization. Michael Robbins proposes instead that psychosis is the outcome of a different developmental pathway. Conscious mind functions in two qualitatively different ways, primordial conscious mentation and reflective representational thought, and psychosis is the result of persistence of a primordial mental process, which is adaptive in infancy, in later situations in which it is neither appropriate nor adaptive.
In Part I Robbins describes how the medical model of psychosis underlies the current approach of both psychiatry and psychoanalysis, despite the fact that neuroscience has failed to confirm the model's basic organic assumption. In Part II Robbins examines two of Freud's models of psychosis that are based on the assumption of a constitutional inability to develop a normal or neurotic mind. The theories of succeeding generations of analysts have for the most part reiterated the biases of Freud's two models, so that psychoanalysis considers the psychoses beyond its scope. In Part III Robbins proposes that the psychoses are the result of disturbances in the attachment-separation phase of development, leading to maladaptive persistence of a primordial form of mental activity related to Freud's primary process. Finally, in Part IV Robbins describes a psychoanalytic approach to treatment based on his model. The book is richly illustrated with material from Robbins' clinical practice.
Psychoanalysis Meets Psychosishas the potential to undo centuries of alienation between society and psychotic persons. The book offers an understanding of severe mental illness that will be novel and inspiring not only to psychoanalysts but to all mental health professionals.

It is common wisdom that central banks in the postwar (1945-1970s) period were passive bureaucracies constrained by fixed-exchange rates and inflationist fiscal policies. This view is mostly retrospective and informed by US and UK experiences. This book tells a different story. Eric Monnet shows that the Banque de France was at the heart of the postwar financial system and economic planning, and contributed to economic growth by both stabilizing inflation and fostering direct lending to priority economic activities. Credit was institutionalized as a social and economic objective. Monetary policy and credit controls were conflated. He then broadens his analysis to other European countries and sheds light on the evolution of central banks and credit policy before the Monetary Union. This new understanding has important ramifications for today, since many emerging markets have central bank policies that are similar to Western Europe's in the decades of high growth.

In Recording History, Peter Martland uses a range of archival sources to trace the genesis and early development of the British record industry from1888 to 1931. A work of economic and cultural history that draws on a vast range of quantitative data, it surveys the commercial and business activities of the British record industry like no other work of recording history has before. Martland's study charts the successes and failures of this industry and its impact on domestic entertainment. Showcasing its many colorful pioneers from both sides of the Atlantic, Recording History is first and foremost an account of The Gramophone Company Ltd, a precursor to today's recording giant EMI, and then the most important British record company active from the late 19th century until the end of the second decade of the twentieth century. Martland's history spans the years from the original inventors through industrial and market formation and final take-off--including the riveting battle in recording formats. Special attention is given to the impact of the First World War and the that followed in its wake. Scholars of recording history will find in Martland's study the story of the development of the recording studio, of the artists who made the first records (from which some like Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso earned a fortune), and the change records wrought in the relationship between performer and audience, transforming the reception and appreciation of musical culture. Filling a much-needed gap in scholarship, Recording History documents the beginnings of the end of the contemporary international record industry.

The fifteenth-century English translation of Guillaume de Deguileville's Le Pèlerinage de la Vie Humaine opens with the author figure making a strange assertion about the text: "In Frensch I haue set it so þat lewede mowe vnderstande it" [I have set it in French so that ordinary people may understand it]. The cognitive dissonance created by this phrase, written in English but claiming to be written in French, underscores the vexed status of the vernacular in fifteenth-century England. Translating The Pilgrimage of the Life of Man into English expanded the circulation of the text by making it available to a group of "ordinary people" that included English monolinguals. This dissertation argues that the two fifteenth-century English translations of the Pilgrimage, one anonymous and one by John Lydgate, work to regulate this expanded audience because of their unknown educational backgrounds. Many scholars read fifteenth-century concern over the vernacular allowing lay access to religious ideas as tied to the Wycliffite heresy and Archbishop Arundel's Constitutions of 1409. I argue, however, that this concern is part of a conversation with a much wider scope: the debate over the use of religious images in Christianity, under discussion as early as the letters of Pope Gregory the Great (c. 600 CE). This debate questioned the use of images in Christianity, and many arguments over these religious images pointed to the fact that images are empty inside and can fail to signify; the Pilgrimage articulates these same concerns about its allegorical form. The Pilgrimage offers its audience guidance in determining what the allegory signifies, but this dissertation demonstrates how that guidance also regulates the text's audience. The Pilgrimage manages its lay audience by constructing an ideal reader, denigrating the material body, substituting sensory information, and conflating allegorical bodies with the audience's bodies. However, the text continually undermines its own attempts to regulate its audience, drawing attention to both the flexibility of the allegorical form and its inability to signify concretely. The way the Pilgrimage manages—nd fails to manage—he "lewede" audience to whom it claims to appeal points to how visual and textual representations of religious topics undermine ecclesiastical control. The failures of signification in the Pilgrimage's texts and manuscript illustrations demonstrate the interpretive power these representations offer their audiences as well as their resistance to functioning as methods of ecclesiastical control.

Our understanding of human rationality has changed significantly since the beginning of the century, with growing emphasis being placed on multiple rationalities, each adapted to the specific tasks of communities of practice. We may think of the world as an ontological unity-but we use a plurality of methods to investigate and represent this world. This development has called into question both the appeal to a universal rationality, characteristic of the Enlightenment, and also the simple 'modern-postmodern' binary.The Territories of Human Reasonis the first major study to explore the emergence of multiple situated rationalities. It focuses on the relation of the natural sciences and Christian theology, but its approach can easily be extended to other disciplines. It provides a robust intellectual framework for discussion of transdisciplinarity, which has become a major theme in many parts of the academic world.
Alister E. McGrath offers a major reappraisal of what it means to be 'rational' which will have significant impact on older discussions of this theme. He sets out to explore the consequences of the seemingly inexorable move away from the notion of a single universal rationality towards a plurality of cultural and domain-specific methodologies and rationalities. What does this mean for the natural sciences? For the philosophy of science? For Christian theology? And for the interdisciplinary field of science and religion? How can a single individual hold together scientific and religious ideas, when these arise from quite different rational approaches?
