相信学翻译的同学对“XX化”这样的词汇并不陌生，它多出现在演讲稿和政府公文里。CATTI笔译考试中也不时会出现。例如刚刚过去的2019年6月CATTI二笔汉英第一篇中就出现了这样一句话：“老龄事业发展和养老体系建设的法制化、信息化、标准化、规范化程度明显提高”。另外，比较常见的有工业化（industrialization）、现代化（modernization）、城镇化（urbanization）等。
汉语具有强大的构词能力，“化”字跟在某个字、名词或者形容词后可以构成一个动词。在翻译时，大多带“化”字的词在英文单词里都有对应的-ize, -ized, -ization后缀。但并不意味着所有的“化”字词汇都能够或者应该这样翻译。当“化”字与其他词汇构成表示“非自主”性并带使动意义的词组时，翻译时就要注重意义对等，不要局限于字面翻译。
首先，我们可以采取灵活变通的方式，用“比较级”来解决这个难题。
例1: 要让我们的干部队伍革命化、年轻化、知识化、专业化。
参考译文：
The ranks of carders should be made more revolutionary, younger in average age, better educated and professionally more competent.
例2： 要按照革命化现代化正规化相统一的原则，加强军队全面建设。
参考译文：
We need to strengthen all aspects of the army in accordance with the principle of making it more revolutionary, modern and standardized.
我们再来看2016年上半年二笔真题：
例3：……加剧了家庭的小型化、多样化、离散化。
参考译文：
……has made families smaller and more diversified, and members of more families live in separation. （官方）
……has made families smaller, more diversified and more decentralized/physically less connected/more distant. （韩刚）
本句中有三个“化”，只有“多样化”可译为“diversify”，其他两个没有对应的名词形式。“家庭的小型化”实指家庭变小的趋势或现象，因此宜用比较级，“多样化”同理也应该用比较级。“离散化”是说家庭成员居住在不同的地方，“离散”本身不存在明显的比较级含义，因此翻译为”越来越多的家庭成员没有共同居住“。而韩刚的译文版本仍然采用了比较级的方式。
另外，再看2016年上半年三笔汉英中的一句话：
例4：随着中国工业化、城市化进程和人口老龄化趋势的加快……
参考译文：
With the quickened pace of the country's industrialization and urbanization, as well as its increasingly aging population,（官方）
As China's industrialization and urbanization gain momentum and the aging of its population accelerates,（韩刚）
在这句话中，”人口老龄化“没有对应的词，只能翻译为aging population, aging of its population.
这种情况下，可以视为一种名词化表达。
类似地，在2016年上半年二笔真题中还有一句话：
例5：……推进流动人口基本公共服务均等化……
官方参考译文为：
……ensure equal access to basic public services among the migrant people……
韩刚参考译文为：
we will work to provide/push for equal access to basic public services for mobile population……
这里既没有用对应的词，也没有用比较级，而是用了名词短语。有人将均等化翻译为equalize，但是它经常与with连用，如equalize the conditions of those who perform military services with those who perform civil service（使服兵役者与公务员享有平等的条件），而本句中并未出现明确的比较对象，因此不宜用equalize，而是用equal access to这一名词化表达。
