Integrating a breathing technique could mean a much better experience for all of us

with something that transcends the mere aesthetic flair to the point where it can effectively be stress-relieving? Something much more similar to this quiet circle, for example:

        This essential circle animation represents a breathing pattern. There are a lot of them but this in particular is astoundingly simple. You’re meant to inhale when the circle’s expanding, hold your breath while it’s still, exhale as it’s contracting, and finally detain your lungs once again before repeating the cycle. Just follow along and try, it’s really powerful.

Each stage lasts four seconds and indulging in just a few repetitions should calm everyone’s nerves down, even when your favourite show on Netflix has suddenly ceased streaming.

This particular technique, punctuated in four phases of four seconds each, is called “box breathing”, and appears in a 2016 article on TIME, by former U.S. Navy SEAL Mark Divine. Here is an excerpt of what he has to say about it:

Box breathing is a powerful, yet simple, relaxation technique that aims to return breathing to its normal rhythm. This breathing exercise may help to clear the mind, relax the body, and improve focus.

I like Google’s T-rex, but it may well be that we all could benefit more from strong, wellbeing-oriented design choices. Changing a loading animation is not in itself a big deal, but if such a small change is directed towards suggesting users a useful practice that could easily fit their routine, that is indeed a big deal. Personally, I find it fascinating that such a simple and powerful exercise as box breathing could be introduced in someone’s life by changing an apparently insignificant detail.
