Lesson 88 Trapped in a mine

Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their lives. However, rescue operations are proving difficult. If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse. Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine. They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule. If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have completed the job in a few hours. As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with the closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will soon get out. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly. If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart.

1. Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours.

trap is something you can’t get out of. If a critter is nibbling at your cherry tomato plants, set a trap to catch the thief. (But if it turns out to be your little brother, set him free!)

If a TV character yells, "Look out! It's a trap!" they're dramatically warning someone about an imminent surprise attack or mean-spirited trick. Other kinds of traps include a plumbing trap, a curved pipe that traps liquid in it so that gases can't rise up into your sink, and a sand trap, the tricky hollow where your ball gets stuck on a golf course. The Germanic root word of trap literally means "that onto which one steps."

而如果你在开车,导航则会提醒你前面有监控测速,可以用speed trap;

而用来捕捉老鼠的捕鼠器,就是mousetrap;

如果你陷入困境,难以逃脱某种牢笼,也可以用trap,表示:an unpleasant situation from which it's hard to escape

trap as a verb

OW as in Now

to start this sound, drop the jaw, the first sound is similar to the sound [æ] as in bat[bæt]

the tongue is wide and flat, the back stretched up a little bit, the tongue tip touches the back of the bottom front teeth.

the upper lip might lift a little or it would be relaxed

to transition into the second position, the lips round and the jaw drops less,

the back of the tongue stretches up more

this second position is considered to same as the [ʊ] as in push[pʊʃ] vowel.

but when it's a part of diphthong, the lips round more than when it occurs as a pure vowel.
