Chapter 5 Men from Mars

There was no floating inside the Space Hotel. The gravity-making machine saw to that.

see (to it) that确保,保证做到

The group stared in silence at all this luxury.

Luxury is very great comfort, especially among beautiful and expensive surroundings.

A faint humming noise came from somewhere below the floor, but that only made the silence more spooky.

informal  A place that is spooky has a frightening atmosphere, and makes you feel that there are ghosts around.

They had broken into the greatest machine ever built by man, the property of the United States Government, and if they were discovered and captured as they surely must be in the end, what would happen to them then? Jail for life? Yes, or something worse.

jail for life 终身监禁

Mr Wonka turned the paper over. On the other side it said: ...

YOU ARE TRESPASSING ON AMERICAN PROPERTY! YOU ARE ORDERED TO IDENTIFY YOURSELVES IMMEDIATELY!

trespass: If someone trespasses, they go onto someone else's land without their permission.

‘SPEAK! SPEAK! SPEAK!’ Grandma Georgina shot under the sheet. Grandma Josephine stuck her fingers in her ears. Grandpa George buried his head in the pillow. Mr and Mrs Bucket, both petrified, were once again in each other’s arms.

Mr Wonka stood very still, and although his face looked calm, you can be quite sure his clever inventive brain was spinning like a dynamo.

inventive adj.

dynamo: A dynamo is a device that uses the movement of a machine or vehicle to produce electricity. 发电机

IF YOU DO NOT REPLY WE SHALL BE FORCED TO REGARD YOU AS DANGEROUS ENEMIES.

be forced to 被迫,其实就是have to do

regard ... as ...

Then, all at once, they saw the tiny twinkling wrinkles of a smile appear around the corners of his eyes. He sprang to life.

spring to life:  to suddenly become very active or busy

Charlie’s eyes were riveted on Mr Wonka.

rivet:

If you are riveted by something, it fascinates you and holds your interest completely.

All eyes were riveted on the TV screen as the small glass object, with its booster-rockets firing, slid smoothly up behind the giant Space Hotel.

The next time Mr Wonka spoke, the words came out so fast and sharp and loud they were like bullets from a machine-gun. ‘ZOONK-ZOONK-ZOONK-ZOONK-ZOONK!’ he barked.

the words came more slowly, but there was a touch of steel in every syllable:

Standing by the window, he saw the huge flakes drifting slowly down out of an icy sky that was the colour of steel.(出自查理和巧克力)

But the President himself kept a cool head and a clear brain.

Summon the Chief Interpreter

English simultaneous interpretation

‘Screaming scorpions!’ cried the President.

I see what you’re driving at!

If you ask someone what they are driving at, you ask that person what they really mean.

If you blow these people up, Mars will declare war on us!

We’d be mashed like potatoes!’

We’ve got to treat these fellows gently. We’ve got to be polite to them, butter them up, make them happy. The last thing we want is to be invaded by men from Mars!

(Brit, informal)If someone butters you up, they try to please you because they want you to help or support them.
