The Tumblr blogging site fell victim Monday to a malware attack that posted a self-propagating and offensive message on users' streams. The problem was fixed quickly, but illustrates the downside to social openness. Security and functionality exist in an inverse relationship. "The more functional you make something, the less secure it tends to become," said Roger Thompson, researcher at ICSA Labs.
