It isn’t a hackish workaround, it is the solution. Since the project is no longer being maintained by the author, it is up to you to make such adjustments. You will need to download the source and import it to your project(s). SlidingMenu#attachToActivity, in the case statement for SLIDING_WINDOW, line 324 for me, add the following.

I have many places in my current project, where I’m supporting back to SDK 11, where I am having to test SDK versions due to methods being deprecated and replaced. It’s just how it is.
