Before Bean met Ivy, she didn’t like her. Bean’s mother was always saying that Bean should try playing with the new girl across the street. But Bean didn’t want to.

过去进行时的结构，主语+was/were+现在分词+其它。
注意：当过去进行时句中有always，forever，continually，constantly等副词时，表示说话人的赞赏或厌烦的感情。此处表赞赏。
“She’s seven years old, just like you,” said her mother. “And she seems like such a nice girl. You could be friends.”

重点词：could，此处不是can的过去式，而是正常的情态动词，表示可能。
and除了表示“和”以外，还有“并且”的意思。

Ivy sat nicely on her front steps. Bean zipped around her yard and yelled. Ivy had long, curly red hair pushed back with a sparkly headband. Bean’s hair was black, and it only came to her chin because it got tangled if it was any longer.

重点词：get tangled中的get是变得的用法。any longer中的any修饰比较级表示一点。
When Bean put on a headband, it fell off. Ivy wore a dress every day. Bean wore a dress when her mother made her. Ivy was always reading a big book. Bean never read big books. Reading made her jumpy.
当比恩戴上发带，发带会掉下来的。艾薇每天都穿着长裙。比恩只有妈妈让她穿时才会穿。艾薇总是愿意读一本大书。比恩从来都不读那些很大的书，读书让她坐立不安。
重点词：jumpy—If you are jumpy，you are nervous or worried about something.
坐立不安的，提心吊胆的。例如：I told myself not to be so jumpy.
