Guiding Questions
1.What does"you are always choosing"? Can you define it and give an example?
The sense which influences your moods is chosen by yourself. If you take it as your responsibility, you will feel powerful, if you regard it as it is thrust upon you, you will feel painful.
For example, when I was in the second year in college, I thought passing CET4 exam was my responsibility, however, some of my friends thought they had to pass it for graduation. So I learned English religiously, and I felt powerful during the stage of learning English, while they learned painfully and regarded it as a nightmare.
2.What's the point of telling William Jame's story?
The story wants to tell us the importance of “taking responsibility”, despite suffering the contempt from others, or having the defect in genetics.
3.Any responsibility problems you had with your boyfriend/girlfriend or parents? If any, please tell us your story.
I have a problem with my parents.
Actually, in my family, all members are not good at expressing love to others. When I live in a long distance from my hometown, my parents will miss me, but every moment we phone each other, we feel nothing to say. The worse is, I can’t even remember to phone them. I always hold the excuse that I am not good at chatting, making connect with my love, but it is my responsibility though I am not good at it. I need to train religiously until one day I can do these things naturally. I want my parents to be happy, so I need to do something, try to change something for a better relationship.
Words
religiously
[Adv] If you do something religiously, you do it very regularly because you feel you have to.
eg:in the past two months, I have been reading English books religiously at 6:00 am.
Thrust upon
[PHRASAL VERB] If something is thrust upon you, you are forced to have it, deal with it, or experience it.
eg:When I broke up with him, the sadness was thrust upon me.
The black sheep
eg:The guy is the back sheep in his family.
Contract
If you contract a serious illness, you become ill with it.
Eg: Unfortunately, he contracted smallpox on the way back.
If you contract with someone to do something, you legally agree to do it for them or for them to do it for you.
Eg: I have contracted with the institute to train my interview skill.
Punch
The punchline of a joke or funny story is its last sentence or phrase, which gives it its humour.(与幽默有关)但是在文中“the punch line?”
Punch
Therefore, when I get mad at somebody, I express that anger, but I also make a point of not punching them in the face.(用拳猛击)
And by awesome, I mean it felt like getting punched in the stomach about 253 times.
Jack punches an array of inanimate objects and then immediately washes his hands.
Thinking(一些值得深思的道理)
Often the same event can be good or bad, depending on the metric we choose to use.
Often the only difference between a problem being painful or being powerful is a sense that we chose it, and that we are responsible for it.
And it’s true, it’s not their fault. But it’s still their responsibility.
不过作者说得真好——“Often the only difference between a problem being painful or being powerful is a sense that we chose it, and that we are responsible for it”,一旦我们克服了逃避的人之本性,对这些事负责任起来,等待我们的可能并不是painful而是powerful,“纸上谈兵终觉浅”,未来再遇到这样的抉择时,希望自己能好好实践和体会下。
