Family Office

Paragraph 1
1⃣️ THINK OF THE upper echelons of the money-management business, and the image that springs to mind is of fusty private banks in Geneva or London’s Mayfair, with marble lobbies and fake country-house meeting-rooms designed to make their super-rich clients feel at home. 2⃣️ But that picture is out of date. 3⃣️ A more accurate one would feature hundreds of glassy private offices in California and Singapore that invest in Canadian bonds, European property and Chinese startups—and whose gilded patrons are sleepwalking into a political storm.
1⃣️ THINK OF THE upper echelons of the money-management business, and the image that springs to mind is of fusty private banks in Geneva or London’sMayfair, with marble lobbies and fake country-house meeting-rooms designed to make their super-rich clients feel at home.
e.g.tears sprang from her eyes, when she heard the bad news.(当她听到这个坏消息,泪水夺眶而出。) 类似的表达还有“come to mind”。e.g. when we talk about luxuries, Hermes and Louis Vuitton come to our mind.(当一提及奢侈品时就会我们想到爱马仕和LV。)
类似表达还有”a home from home”。e.g. All guests find the hotel a home from home.(这间旅馆让顾客有宾至如归的体验感。) e.g.Hangzhou is the home of China’s silk.(杭州是中国丝绸之乡。)
3⃣️ A more accurate one would feature hundreds of glassy private offices in California and Singapore that invest in Canadian bonds, European property and Chinese startups—and whose gilded patrons are sleep walking into a political storm.
e.g. Should I add a scarf to this jacket or would it be gilding the lily?(我穿了外套再配个围巾会不会显得多此一举啊。)
e.g. we are sleepwalking into a surveillance society.(我们正稀里糊涂的步入到一个到处有监控的社会。)
Paragraph 2
1⃣️ Global finance is being transformed as billionaires get richer and cut out the middlemen by creating their own “family offices”, personal investment firms that roam global markets looking for opportunities. 2⃣️ Largely unnoticed, family offices have become a force in investing, with up to $4trn of assets—more than hedge funds and equivalent to 6% of the value of the world’s stockmarkets. 3⃣️ As they grow even bigger in an era of populism, family offices are destined to face uncomfortable questions about how they concentrate power and feed inequality.
1⃣️ Global finance is being transformed as billionaires get richer and cut out the middlemen by creating their own “family offices”, personal investment firms that roam global markets looking for opportunities.
e.g. start today by cutting out junk food(从今天开始戒了垃圾食品。)
e.g.his eyes roamed over the beauty.(他扫了一眼那个漂亮的女人。)
2⃣️ Largely unnoticed, family offices have become a force in investing, with up to $4trn of assets—more than hedge funds and equivalent to 6% of the value of the world’s stockmarkets.
e.g.Buying a house is a hedge against inflation.(买房防范通货膨胀。)
3⃣️ As they grow even bigger in an era of populism, family offices are destined to face uncomfortable questions about how they concentrate power and feed inequality.
destined to v.s.doomed to字面上都有“注定”的意思。destined to表述的意义为中性,而doomed to多指不幸事情发生的必然结果后面常和failure, instruction 等词连用,e.g.her plan doomed to failure. destined for指“前往某地的”,e.g.the flight/train was destined for New York.(开往纽约的飞机/火车。)
Paragraph 3
1⃣️ The concept is hardly new; John D.Rockefeller set up his family office in 1882. 2⃣️ But the number has exploded this century. 3⃣️ Somewhere between5,000 and 10,000 are based in America and Europe and in Asian hubs such as Singapore and Hong Kong. 4⃣️ Though their main task is to manage financial assets, the biggest offices, some with hundreds of staff, undertake all sorts of other chores, from tax and legal work to acting as high-powered butlers who book jets and pamper pets.
1⃣️ The concept is hardly new; John D. Rockefellerset up his family office in 1882.
2⃣️ But the number has exploded this century.
explode = to increase suddenly, sharply, and without control e.g. The number of crypto currency exchanges has exploded.
3⃣️ Somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 are based in America and Europe and in Asian hubs such as Singapore and Hong Kong.
Somewhere between A and B 表示范围在A和B之间。e.g. Amnesty's report says that somewhere between 5,000 and 13,000 people were tortured and executed at one military prison outside Damascus.( PBSNewsHour)
hub 中心You can describe a place as a hub of an activity when it is a very important center for that activity. e.g. Together, we will assist the Afghan Security forces to destroy the terrorist hub, " Defense Secretary James Mattis said.
4⃣️ Though their main task is to manage financial assets, the biggest offices, some with hundreds of staff, undertake all sorts of other chores, from tax and legal work to acting as high-powered butlers who book jets and pamper pets.
book jets and pamper pets jets和pets 压尾韵,pamper和pets压头韵
Paragraph 4
1⃣️ The costs of bringing such expertise in-mansion means that they generally make sense only for those worth over$100m, the top 0.001% of the global pile. 2⃣️ Asian tycoons such as Jack Ma of Alibaba have created their own fiefs. 3⃣️ The largest Western family offices, such as the one set up by George Soros, an investor and philanthropist, oversee tens of billions and are as muscular as Wall Street firms, competing with banks and private-equity groups to buy whole companies.
2⃣️ Asian tycoons such as Jack Ma of Alibaba have created their own fiefs.
A fief was the central element of feudalism.
feudalism: a land grant in exchange for service.
关于fief想了解更多,可以参考《A brief introduction of western civilization》
3⃣️ The largest Western family offices, such as the one set up by George Soros, an investor and philanthropist, oversee tens of billions and are as muscular as Wall Street firms, competing with banks and private-equity groups to buy whole companies.
Paragraph 5
1⃣️ Every investment reflects the society that spawned it. 2⃣️ The humble mutual fund came of age in the 1970s after two decades of middle-class prosperity in America. 3⃣️ The rise of family offices reflects soaring inequality. 4⃣️ Since 1980 the share of the world’s wealth owned by the top 0.01% has risen from 3% to 8%. 5⃣️ As the founders of family firms receive dividends or the proceeds of initial public offerings, they usually redeploy the cash. 6⃣️ But since the financial crisis there has been a loss of faith in external money managers. 7⃣️ Rich clients have taken a closer look at private banks’ high fees and murky incentives, and balked.
1⃣️ Every investment reflects the society that spawned it.
spawned:
1) (of fish, frogs, etc.) to lay eggs 产卵
2) (often disapproving) to cause sth to develop or be produced.
2⃣️ The humble mutual fund came of age in the 1970s after two decades of middle-class prosperity in America.
e.g. The company has worked its way up from humble beginnings to become the market leader.
5⃣️ As the founders of family firms receive dividends or the proceeds of initial public offerings, they usually redeploy the cash.
e.g. The proceeds of the concert will go to charity.
7⃣️ Rich clients have taken a closer look at private banks’ high fees and murky incentives, and balked.
We would like to think about the incentives—what should be done to the contributions that have to be paid by the people who adopt habits to prevent diseases,” he says.
If your mom wants you to mow the lawn but you don't feel like it, she might offer to treat you to ice cream after as an incentive. An incentive is something that stimulates you to take action or work harder.
比如:Money is still a major incentive in most occupations.
They haven't much incentive to work hard.
常见的用法还有:give sb. an incentive to do sth.
A little bonus will give the employees an incentive to work harder.
murky (disapproving or humorous) (of people's actions or character) not clearly known and suspected of not being honest.
Paragraph 6
1⃣️ These trends are unlikely to fade, as our Briefing explains. 2⃣️ The number of billionaires is still growing—199 newbies made the grade last year. 3⃣️ In the emerging world older entrepreneurs who created firms in the boom years after 1990 are preparing to cash out, while in America and China younger tech entrepreneurs may soon float their companies, releasing a new wave of cash to reinvest. 5⃣️ Family offices’ weight in the financial system, therefore, looks likely to rise further. 6⃣️ As it does, the objections to them will rise exponentially. 7⃣️ The most obvious of these is the least convincing—that family offices have created inequality. 8⃣️ They are a consequence, not its cause. Nonetheless, there are concerns—and one in particular that is worth worrying about.
2⃣️ The number of billionaires is still growing—199 newbies made the grade last year.
make the grade 达到标准,符合要求。 e.g. About 10% of trainees fail to make the grade。
3⃣️ In the emerging world older entrepreneurs who created firms in the boom years after 1990 are preparing to cash out, while in America and China younger tech entrepreneurs may soon float their companies, releasing a new wave of cash to reinvest.
The company was floated on the stock market in 2007. Last year, the company raised $25 billion in its IPO, or initial public offering.
6⃣️ As it does, the objections to them will rise exponentially.

Paragraph 7
1⃣️ The first is that family offices could endanger the stability of the financial system.2⃣️ Combining very rich people, opacity and markets can be explosive.3⃣️ LTCM, a $100bn hedge fund backed by the super-rich, blew up in 1998, almost bringing down Wall Street. 4⃣️ Scores of wealthy people fell for a Ponzi scheme run by Bernie Madoff that collapsed in 2008. 5⃣️Still, as things stand family offices do not look like the next disaster waiting to happen. 6⃣️ They have debt equivalent to 17% of their assets, making them among the least leveraged participants in global markets. 7⃣️ On balance, they may even be a stabilising influence. 8️⃣Their funds are usually deployed for decades, making them far less vulnerable to panics than banks and many hedge funds.
1⃣️ The first is that family offices couldendangerthe stability of the financial system.
endanger危及到(put sth. in danger of being hurt damaged, or destroyed)我们更为熟悉的用法是endangered animals,濒危动物,作动词。 Smoking during pregnancy can endanger your baby's health.
2⃣️ Combining very rich people, opacity and markets can be explosive.
opacity一个意思是模糊不透明( the quality of being difficult to see through),一个意思是晦涩,费解(difficult to understand)近义词obscurity, 反义词transparent
3⃣️ LTCM, a $100bn hedge fund backed by the super-rich, blew up in 1998, almost bringing down Wall Street.
blow up爆炸,引爆(it is destroyed by an explosion)这个词组挺有意思的,也可以指给气球或者轮胎打气 (If you blow up something such as a balloon or a tyre, you fill it with air.)
4⃣️ Scores ofwealthy people fell for a Ponzi scheme run by Bernie Madoff that collapsed in 2008.
类似的表达还有a plethora of
6⃣️ They have debt equivalent to 17% of their assets, making them among the least leveraged participants in global markets.
leveraged 举债经营,融资(use borrowed money in order to buy it or pay for the company or investment).
8️⃣ Their funds are usually deployed for decades, making them far less vulnerable to panics than banks and many hedge
这里是一个正式的用法,为了某个特定目的有效的利用(to use something for a particular purpose, especially ideas, arguments etc)
e.g. a job in which a variety of professional skills will be deployed
LTCM- Long Term Capital Management was a large hedge fund led by Nobel Prize-winning economists and renowned Wall Street traders that nearly collapsed the global financial system in 1998. This was due to LTCM’s high-risk arbitrage trading strategies.
A Ponzi scheme is a form of fraud which lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors by using funds obtained from more recent investors. The victims are led to believe that the profits are coming from product sales or other means, and they remain unaware that other investors are the source of profits.
Paragraph 8
1️⃣ The second worry is that family offices could magnify the power of the wealthy over the economy. 2️⃣ This is possible: were Bill Gates to invest exclusively in Turkey, he would own 65% of its stockmarket. 3️⃣ But the aim is usually to diversify risk, not concentrate power, by taking capital from the original family business and putting it into a widely spread portfolio. 4️⃣ The family-office industry is less concentrated than mainstream asset management, which a few firms such as BlackRock dominate. 5️⃣ Compared with most fund managers, family offices have welcome habits, including a longer-term horizon and an appetite for startups.
1️⃣ The second worry is that family offices couldmagnifythe power of the wealthy over the economy.
A lens would magnify the picture so it would be like looking at a large TV screen.
e.g. The report tends to magnify the risks involved.
2️⃣ This is possible: were Bill Gates to invest exclusively in Turkey, he would own 65% of its stockmarket.
were... would虚拟语气, If Bill Gates were to invest exclusively in Turkey, he would own 65% of its stockmarket.
3️⃣ But the aim is usually to diversify risk, not concentrate power, by taking capital from the original family business and putting it into a widely spread portfolio.
5️⃣ Compared with most fund managers, family offices have welcome habits, including a longer-term horizon and an appetite for startups.
horizon领域,眼界,范围(limits of what you want to do or of what you are interested or involved in.)
e.g. By embracing other cultures and genres, we actually broaden our horizons, rather than narrow any existing ones.
on the horizon即将来临的( seem likely to happen in the future)
Business is good now, but there are a few problems on the horizon.
appetite for强烈渴望 their strong desire for something. e.g. Someone's appetite for success
BlackRock, Inc. is an American global investment management corporation based in New York City. Founded in 1988, initially as a risk management and fixed income institutional asset manager, BlackRock is today the world's largest asset manager with $6.29 trillion in assets under management as of December 2017. -Wiki
Paragraph 9
1⃣️ It is the third danger that has most bite: that family offices might have privileged access to information, deals and tax schemes, allowing them to outperform ordinary investors. 2⃣️ So far there is little evidence for this. 3⃣️ The average family office returned 16% in 2017 and 7% in 2016, according to Campden Wealth, a research firm, slightly lagging behind world stockmarkets. 4⃣️ Nonetheless, tycoons are well connected. 5⃣️ Family offices are becoming more complex—a third have at least two branches—making tax wheezes easier. 6⃣️ Hungry brokers and banks are rolling out the red carpet and pitching deals with unlisted firms that are not available to ordinary investors. 7⃣️ If all this did lead to an entrenched, unfair advantage, the effect, when compounded over decades, would make wealth inequality disastrously worse.
1⃣️ It is the third danger that has most bite: that family offices might have privileged access to information, deals and tax schemes, allowing them to outperform ordinary investors.
have the most bite, bite我们比较熟悉的是他的动词“咬”的含义,但是在这里bite是个名词,意思是“影响力;感染力”。
e.g. Student must have access to good resources.
It was a great privilege to hear her sing. We are privileged to welcome you as our speaker this evening.
3⃣️ The average family office returned 16% in 2017 and 7% in 2016, according to Campden Wealth, a research firm, slightly lagging behind world stockmarkets.
e.g. Last year the company returned a loss of $157 million.
lag behind sb/sth “落后于...”
① time lag,“(两件相关的事件的)时间间隔,时滞” e.g. There is a time lag between theoretical research and practical applications.
② jet lag,“时差反应”,e.g. For those of us who fly more than a couple of time zones from home, jet lagcan be a serious challenge. 我们常常说“倒时差”,就是这个词啦,可不要用“time difference”哦,我们可以说“get over jet lag”。 What is thetimedifferencebetween Beijing and New York?
5⃣️ Family offices are becoming more complex—a third have at least two branches—making tax wheezes easier.
wheeze 这里是名词,意思是a clever trick or plan“花招,计谋”,所以tax wheezes就是指一些避税的招数。
6⃣️ Hungry brokers and banks are rolling out the red carpet and pitching deals with unlisted firms that are not available to ordinary investors.
roll out the red carpet“roll out”是“铺开”的意思,从一个管子状铺成平的,比如文中的“铺开地毯(roll out the carpet)”,“铺开海报(roll out a poster)”,我们包饺子,擀饺子皮的时候也可以用到“roll out dough wrappers”。 “roll out the red carpet”字面意思是“铺开红地毯”,引申为“隆重欢迎,热烈欢迎的意思”。
pitch 本意是“投,抛”,这里的意思是“推销,争取生意” e.g. Representatives went to Japan to pitch the company's newest product.
available 这个词很好用,如果一个东西available,就是说这个东西“is able to be used or can easily be bought or found”,如果说一个人available,那么有两种含义,一个是这个人"不忙,有空",还有一个是说这个人是单身。
7⃣️If all this did lead to an entrenched, unfair advantage, the effect, when compounded over decades, would make wealth inequality disastrously worse.
compound 这个词我之前只知道他的名词“复合物;复合词”的意思/ ˈkɒmpaʊnd/,而这里是动词“使恶化、使加重”的意思/kəmˈpaʊnd/. e.g. Helmut's problems were compounded by his lack of concentration.
disastrously 用来形容worse的词可以记一下,不要只会用much/a lot哦!considerably, dramatically, infinitely, a sight, significantly
Paragraph 10
The rich discover do-it-yourself
1⃣️ The answer is vigilance and light. 2⃣️ Most regulators, treasuries and tax authorities are beginners when it comes to dealing with family offices, but they need to ensure that rules on insider trading, the equal servicing of clients by dealers and parity of tax treatment are observed. 3⃣️ And they should prod family offices with assets of over, say, $10bn to publish accounts detailing their workings. 4⃣️ In a world that is suspicious of privilege, big family offices have an interest in boosting transparency. 5⃣️ In return, they should be free to operate unmolested. 6⃣️ They may even have something to teach hordes of flailing asset managers who serve ordinary investors, many of whom may look at their monthly fees and wish that they, too, could ditch the middlemen.
1⃣️ The answer is vigilance and light.
在这层含义下,拓展两个词组:bring sth to light “披露,揭露” e.g. These facts have only just been brought to light. come to light “为人所知,变得众所周知” e.g. New evidence has recently come to light.
2⃣️ Most regulators, treasuries and tax authorities are beginners when it comes todealing with family offices, but they need to ensure that rules on insider trading, the equal servicing of clients by dealers and parity of tax treatment are observed.
when it comes to 当谈到... 而论 e.g. When it comes to diet and exercise, we know what to do, but we don't do what we know.
3⃣️ And they should prod family offices with assets of over, say, $10bn to publish accounts detailing their workings.
比如《哈利波特》里有一句“He was looking at her closely through his half-moon spectacles, his long fingers gentlyprodding and poking.
e.g. Let's take any writer, say, Dickens...
working the way that an organization, a machine or a system operates
5⃣️ In return, they should be free to operate unmolested.
He died young. They died happy.
I left home young and returned old. I drink the tea hot. I drink the tea quickly.
e.g. They allow him to pass unmolested.
6⃣️ They may even have something to teach hordes of flailing asset managers who serve ordinary investors, many of whom may look at their monthly fees and wish that they, too, could ditch the middlemen.
I can't bring myself to ditch him and start again.
另外还有一些不带rich的,比如loaded,rolling in it/money
