Words and expressions

1. I’ve annotated thepiece, explaining the decisions I made along the way.

annotate: to add short notes to a book or piece of writing to explain parts of it

仿写: Some people annotate as they read.

2. Every town starts with dirt streets that eventually get paved as the inhabitants prosper and subdue their environment. 

prosper: grow stronger; gain in wealth

subdue: to defeat or control a person or group, especially using force

仿写: Police managed to subdue the angry crowd.

His business continued to prosper.

3. But I didn’t begrudge a minute of it. 

begrudge: to feel annoyed or unhappy that you have to pay something, give someone something

仿写: I begrudge spending so much money on train fares.

Reflection

这一章探讨了如何构思文章,作者举了很多例子说明我们在写作中要做的很多decisions, 比如长短句,结构,但最大的decision莫过于写什么,写我们感兴趣的,主题或者说内容不会主动来找我们,作为写作者,必须要有写的决心。

If a subject  interests you, go after it, even if it’s in the next county or the next state or the next country. It’s not going to come looking for you.Decide what you want to do. Then decide to do it. Then do it.
