We seem to appreciate the accomplishments of science more than the miracles of nature.

The author is reffering to a number of relationships. The first is between individual freedom and political power, that is, if one is not free as an individual, one does not have real power within a community. The second is the tie between language and society and economics. If one doesn't have linguistic freedom/power, one is unlikely to have social freedom or economic success. Because the personal freedom to use language is fundamental to other freedoms and power, if one's language is destroyed, it endangers one's standing in the world.
