文章写作的同时代，东方正值乾隆时期，如果当时的国人读到此文，会如何翻译？
“When I am in a serious humour, I very often walk by myself in Westminster Abbey, where the gloominess of the place, and the use to which it is applied, with solemnity of the building, and the condition of the people who lie in it, are apt to fill the mind with a kind of melancholy, or rather thoughtfulness, that is not disagreeable.”

问“天道忌满，人道忌全。”的翻译。我的回复是： Perfection is always a forbidding word for the divine, and fullness, the human. 后来想到：在没有上下文的时候为确保西方人一看就懂，一个更好的版本应该是： Never overdo anything, whoever you are, the divine or the human.
天下皆知美之为美，斯恶矣﹔皆知善之为善，斯不善矣
