The Best Way to Learn Anything: The Feynman Technique

学习事物最好的方式:来自Feynman的技巧


There are only four short steps to implementing the Feynman Technique.

这是实现Feynman技巧的四个小步骤。


Step 1: Choose a Concept

步骤1:选择一个(要学习)的概念

Now this can be anything from gravity to world history.

可以是任何概念,从地球引力到世界历史,

It works for everything.

Now take out a blank sheet of paper and write the subject you want to learn at the top.

现在,拿出一张空白的纸吧,在顶部写上你想学习的主题。


Step 2: Teach It

步骤2:教授它

Write out everything you know about the subject as if you were teaching it to someone else.

写下你所知的关于你所学的这个主题的一切,设想你在教授另一个人一样。

Not your smart friend but rather a toddler.

(并且你教授的)这个人并不聪慧,而是一个蹒跚学步的孩子。

This may sound silly but this part is incredibly important and has worked wonders for me learning new things.

这听起来很可笑,但却是重要的一环,这种方式在我学习新事物时展现出了神奇的效果。


When I used to learn new subjects I would explain them with complicated vocabulary and jargon.

过去,当我学习新事物时,常常使用复杂的词汇和术语来解释它们。

The problem with this approach is that I was fooling myself.

这样的方式产生的问题是我把自己都弄糊涂了。

I didn’t know that I didn’t understand.

我弄不懂我不明白的地方。

And often, because I was using the right vocabulary, my lack of understanding was obscured from my teachers.

通常,因为我使用正确的词汇,所以老师们掩盖(忽略)了我缺乏理解的情况。


When you write out the idea from start to finish in simple language that a toddler can understand (tip: use only the most common words) you force yourself to understand the concept and you get a clear understanding of where you might have some gaps.

当你从头到尾用简单易懂的方式写下你的想法(提示:只使用最普通的单词),连小孩子都能理解的描述促使你自己理解所学的概念,使得模糊的地方变得清晰明了。


Step 3: Go Back

步骤3:回溯(再次学习)

In step two you will inevitably encounter gaps in your knowledge where you’re forgetting something important, not able to explain it, or simply have trouble connecting an important concept.

在步骤二中你将不能回避自己知识中欠缺之处,那些被遗忘的重点、无法解释之处或只是无法串联起一个重要的概念。

This is valuable feedback and where the learning starts to happen.

这就是在学习开始时反馈的价值。

这些问题在学习之初便会发生,此时尤显反馈的价值。

When you get stuck go back to the source material and re-learn it.

此时你应该回到源材料中并且重新学习它。

For example, if you’ve got a biology test coming up and you’re having problems explaining evolution in simple terms, open up the biology book and start re-reading the section on evolution.

比方说,如果你即将参加生物学考试,但此时你对进化论的概念还有问题,那么打开生物学课本开始重新阅读进化论的章节吧。

Now close the book, take out a new blank piece of paper and explain the sub-idea (in this case evolution) that you were having problems with using the Feynman Technique.

然后合上书本,拿出一张空白的纸,运用Feynman的技巧去解释那存在疑问的观点(??)。

Once you can do that return to your original sheet of paper and continue.

一旦你可以做到了,便回到原来的学习轨道上并继续。


Step 4: Review and Simplify

步骤4:复习并简化

Now you have a set of hand-crafted notes.

现在,你拥有一套手写的笔记了。

Review them to make sure you didn’t borrow any of the jargon from the source material.

重新翻看它们确保自己没有从源材料中借用任何术语。

Read them out loud.

大声的读出来哦。

If the explanation isn’t simple or sounds confusing that’s a good indication that you’re understanding in that area needs some work.

如果解释不够简单或听起来令人困惑那就表明,你在理解此处的知识方面还有工作要做。

Also try creating analogies.

也试试使用一个类比吧。
