IF you go up the Yangtse River, beyond Hankow, past the famous gorges into the westernmost province of Szechuen, and further follow the river past Chungking to its origins, you will come to a giant stone Buddha, three hundred and sixty feet high, carved out of a mountain cliff on the bank.

对westernmost的解释中“that is farthest towards the west”，我没太看懂，似乎towards不仅是我传统理解的“in the direction of 朝，对着”的意思，查了一下在常用词疑难用法当中，有这么个关于“静态”“动态”的有趣的说法：

另外，westernmos在柯林斯的例句是：

搜索“北苏丹”，跳出来的是那个被私人占有的，不能算国家的领地。不被国际承认的国家，怎么会是柯林斯例句中的句子呢？再一搜，原来“北苏丹”是指的与“南苏丹”对应的“苏丹”：

这下词典例句成立了。而对比词典例句和原文，原文的意思难道是四川最西边的一个省吗？原句的叙述至东而西，追溯到长江的源头go up the Yangtse River—beyond Hankow—follow the river past Chungking to its origins，中间直接打入四川最西边不符合逻辑，四川本身作为一个省，也不能再包含省份了，再查province，在葛传椝惯用法：“Jiangsu Province，Fujian Province 等前面没有 the。但 Province of Jiangsu，Province of Fujian 等前面必须有 the ”可以知道，当用the rovince of的时候，后接省份意思是某省，后接国家意思则是某国的省。

今天感受最深的就是传记不写本人，而从家族祖父父亲写起，由故乡四川引入，再由成都风土人情煞尾，体现一方水土养一方人的浸染。这种重在家庭和地理文化传承的观念，其实是中国人特别强烈的情结。写祖父的时候有这么一句：

They would laugh and drink and sing, to the amazement of the usually quiet and well-behaved peasants.

laugh and drink and sing，用and简单粗暴地连接动词，有特别强的画面感，加上与well-behaved peasants的quiet对比，祖父的豪爽大气跃然纸上。
