英文词汇表达每日一记（1）

写在前言：

最近辞职了，为了逼迫自己每天学点东西输出点东西，决定开始每日写点。前段时间加入了一个read&share群，里面有很多爱好英语的人的分享。今天把他们分享的内容整理一下。真的有很多干货！！（暂时还不会排版（′Д`））

1. Various studies point to the conclusion that subjecting the mind to formal discipline—— as when studying geometry or  Latin —— does not, in general, engender a broad transfer of learning.

Engender: To bring into existence; give rise to

Eg. The issue engendered controversy.  这个问题引起了争论。

2. There's an unusual bounty of Democratic candidates of all kinds, and as Jones and Allred demonstrate, that's not merely a numerical phenomenon. It has brought engaging new figures and impassioned new voices into the arena.

Engaging: interesting or pleasant in a way that attracts your attention. 

Impassioned (usually before noun): filled with passion. 

Eg. Movie stars often have an engaging aura that is hard to describe. 电影明星经常有一种难以描述的迷人的光环。

She made an impassioned plea for help.  她情绪激动恳求获得救助。

还有类似的表达 made a plea for justice/mercy

3. Between的用法（翻译的时候要灵活处理）

Sometimes years will go by between rain storms. 可能几年都不下雨。

The elevator girl reads between passengers. (摘自翻译辨误）在没有乘客的时候，开电梯的女孩就看看书。

She modeled between roles. 在没有演出的时候，她客串当模特。

4. Hard-liner: hawk or hawkish person. 形容一个人做派强硬，常用于美国国家政治生态中。也被称为鹰派，相对立的一派是鸽派 （dove/dovish).

5. Streets ahead of 

以前 UK 的学龄前女孩在多方面领先男孩的一篇文章，用这种表达方式作为标题

“Testing reveals girls are still streets ahead of boys”

Girls are racing ahead of boys in a whole range of skills, from reading and writing to showing the ability to concentrate before they even start their first day of school.

6. 关于黑户的翻译

They are living a precarious, paperless existence. 这里的paperless其实就是没有政府的证明文件，或者说没有户口证明的意思。如果要翻译黑户的话，可以参照《经济学人》上的一个表达：Ms. Li is known colloquially in Chinese as a heihu, literally meaning "black hukou". It means she barely has any legal identity at all. 根据这句话，在第一次处理的时候，便可处理为：a heihu is someone who is denied a legal identity due to his/her family's violation of the one-child policy. 然后在下文中，heihu（斜体）便可直接使用了。
