Today is Monday.

A circus had come to the little town, and all the children were begging their parents for permission to go. Of course Tommy and Annika asked to go too, and their kind father immediately gave them some money. Clutching it tightly in their hands, they rushed over to Pippi's house. She was on the porch with her horse, braiding his tail into tiny pigtails and trying each one with red ribbon. She announced that she thought it was his birthday that day so he had to be all dressed up. Tommy asked Pippi, all out of breath because they had been running so fast, that if she wanted to go with them to the circus. Pippi answered that she could go with them most anywhere, but whether she could go to the surkus or not she didn't know, because she didn't know what a surkus was and she didn't know if it hurt. Tommy said it was silly and of course it didn't hurt and it was fun, and there were horses and clowns and pretty ladies that walked the tightrope. Annika told Pippi that it costed money, opening her small fist to see if the shinny half-dollar and the quarters were still there.
