17-year-old Chinese teenager owns 9 national patents
Li Chentian, a 17-year-old teenager from Zhuhai City, south China's Guangdong Province, owns 9 national invention patents so far. He was invited byTsinghua University to attend the “Global Innovation Experience Camp,” which was organized by bothTsinghua Universityand the University of Washington before Spring Festival. As a participant ofthe International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) last year, he recently came to Beijing to share his experience with the teenage competitors of the ISEF this year.
春节前夕,珠海17岁的高中生李晨天应清华大学邀请,赴美参加清华与华盛顿大学合办的“全球创新体验营”,他凭借现场发明的“主动式高压电力线除冰监测系统”,在该次创新挑战赛中获得最佳项目奖;随后,他飞回北京,作为上届ISEF(国际科学与工程大奖赛)的参赛者,给正在参加2018年ISEF项目遴选暨国际交流冬令营的青少年作经验介绍。

Most teenagers in China are busying for studying and preparing forGaokao – the national college entrance exam – whileLihas been busyinventing. He has shown his talent for electronic devices since he was two years old. At the age of nine, he built the "fluoride free electronic fridge." He created the "solar intelligent outdoor manhole cover management system" at the age of 12, and developed a programmable cloud interface terminal and operating system at the age of 13.

"All of my ideas are from my daily life. I devoted a lot of time to inventing and creating. I just started to accumulate ‘10,000 hours’ earlier than others.”Li said. He humbly expressed that, to truly invent, you first must have a strong interest in an idea and then invest plenty of time in it.
“我的所有奇思妙想都源于生活”。“科学没有顿悟,我只是在发明创造上投入了足够多的时间,我只是更早开始‘1万小时’的积累。”李晨天谦虚地表示,搞发明,先是要有强烈的兴趣,再就是投入大量的时间。
Li said that he would like to be curious about inventions and keep an eye out for everything around him. The idea for the “active high-voltage power line de-icing monitoring system” that came during the Innovation Challenge in the US was based on the 2008 ice disaster.

李晨天说搞发明要有好奇心,留意身边发生的每一件事。这次在美国参加创新挑战赛时的项目“主动式高压电力线除冰监测系统”,想法就源于2008年冰灾。
This weather event froze large-area high-voltage lines, cutting their power. The image of a worker trying and finding it difficult to break the ice made a deep impression onLi. He started to think about how he could make a machine that would automatically deice a wire, or make sure it didn't freeze in the first place. While developing this idea, he did a full technical demonstration and, eventually, the Global Innovation Experience Camp gave him an opportunity to show his work.
由于当时大面积高压线结冰造成断线断电,而电视中电力部门人工机械除冰的困窘画面让他印象深刻,因此他一直有个念头,“如果可以让结冰的电线自动除冰,甚至让处于高寒地带的电线可以不结冰,那多好呀!”几年来,他为此项目做足了充分技术论证,而此次全球创新体验营活动正好给了他这样一个机会。
Li said, “Because of the accumulation of technology, it only took me 2 days to make an original prototype for this project, and eventually I won the 'Best Project Award,' the highest award in the competition.”
李晨天说,“由于技术积累充分,这个项目仅用了2天时间就做出了原始样机,并最终在参赛项目中获得最高奖‘Best Project Award(最佳项目奖)’。”
Li also very thanks his parents for supporting his interests.
李晨天说:“如果我小有成绩,要感谢父母的包容和支持。”从小,父母从不逼他去参加兴趣班,不要求他必须是学霸;他说,从上学至今,他从未参加任何补习班。
His parents said that he was a “troublemaker” with household appliances from his childhood.
对自己从小表现出的拆弄家电的“捣乱”行为,父母也是全力支持。
His father set up a “Li's Laboratory” and invested over one million yuan (158,000 US dollars) in order to buy the most advanced equipment for him.
为了支持儿子搞创新发明,父亲在家里给他设置了一间“晨天实验室”。“多年下来,光这个实验室的设备就投入了一百多万元,还不包括他每次发明购买材料以及拆卸的成千件旧的电子产品。”晨天爸爸笑着说,“如果单讲电子实验室,我家的实验室可能是全珠海最好的。”
