An ancillary apartment is also referred to as an accessory unit, backyard cottage, carriage house unit, garage apartment, or granny flat. It usually is an independently accessed secondary residential unit that shares ownership, site, and utilities with the primary unit. The ancillary unit may be within the same structure, such as a basement unit; or attached to the main structure; or detached from main structure, such as above the garage.

附属公寓也称为附属单元、后院小屋、马车房单元、车库公寓或奶奶公寓。它通常是独立进入的二级住宅单元，与一级住宅单元共享所有权、场地和公用设施。附属单元可以位于同一结构内，如地下室；或与主体结构相连；或与主体结构分离，如车库上方。

The number of individuals living alone in America exceeds the number of homes occupied by families with children. To meet this demand, ancillary  units should be encouraged whenever possible. They provide great social benefit by interspersing smaller market-rate units and affordable housing within a neighborhood. Conventional zoning forbids ancillary dwelling units, fearing an overload of parking, traffic, and sewer capacity. To overcome this concern, ancillary units may be limited to a maximum of 600 square feet (56 square meters) so the unit accommodates an individual or couple but not a family.

Bed-and-breakfast (or paying-guest) accommodation is another form of affordable housing. A bedroom within a residential unit is rented to an individual or couple on a daily or monthly basis. The guest shares the common areas within the unit and uses the same entrance as the other residents. In congested Asian cities, it is not uncommon for a family living in a rent controlled apartment to lease several bedrooms to multiple paying guest.

带早餐的住宿（或付费客人住宿）是另一种经济适用房的形式。住宅单元内的一间卧室按日或月租给个人或夫妇。客人共用单元内的公共区域，并与其他居民使用相同的入口。在拥挤的亚洲城市，一个住在租金管制公寓里的家庭把几间卧室租给多名付费客人的情况并不少见。

提供附属住宅单元的四个条件：（1）在主要住宅建筑内，如地下室，（2）在后部，附属于主要住所的结构，（3）后部，在一个与主体住宅分离的结构中，（4）在主体住宅的厚度车库的上方。
