boast v.

释义： (of a person, place, or thing) possess (a feature that is a source of pride)

例句：Phenomenal English boasts arguably the most driven English learners.

『“boast”“拥有、有”，有一种自豪的意味，可译为“以......引以为豪”。它是及物动词。（“boast”还有一个意思是“自夸”，此时后面一般要加 about/of。）』

这个词给我们的启发是，学英语时有时要避免简单地逐字翻译，不要过于依赖英汉、汉英词典。比如在汉英字典中查“有”是不太可能查到 boast，但 boast 在一些语境中可以表示“有”，而且比 have更准确。

① 我们经常说北大和清华有全国最聪明的学生和最强的师资，就可以写：

Peking and Tsinghua Universities boast the most talented students and best faculty members in China. （注意：如果两个大学都是“XX University”，放在一起的话，可以把 University 变成复数。又如：Stanford and Harvard Universities。）

② 深圳汇集了大量高速增长的科技公司，比如大疆无人机、华大基因等，就可以说：

Shenzhen boasts a large number of fast growing technology companies.

③ 几天前 2018 年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖授予了美国的艾利森和日本的本庶佑。想表达日本的诺贝尔获奖者人数居亚洲第一，就可以说：

Japan boasts the most Nobel laureates in Asia.

④ 再来看《经济学人》中两个使用了 boast 的句子。在介绍 Instagram 的用户数时，它写道：

The photo-sharing app has grown snappily and now boasts 1bn monthly users.

⑤ 在写旧金山的垃圾回收率时，是这样写的：

San Francisco boasts a recycling rate of 80%, one of the highest of any rich-world city. （这里的“boast”可以翻译为“高达”。）
