Freedom is not a reaction; freedom is not choice. It is man’s pretence that because he has choice he is free. Freedom is pure observation without direction, without fear of punishment and reward. Freedom is without motive; freedom is not at the end of the evolution of man but lies in the first step of his existence. In observation one begins to discover the lack of freedom. Freedom is found in the choiceless awareness of our daily existence and activity.

我对克这段话的理解:

如果我依赖外界环境才能产生自由感,那么这种自由就是有条件的,是条件反射。比如,需要对比没钱人,才觉得自己挺有钱,有消费的自由。这种自由就是对没钱人的“反应”,不是真自由。

有了分别心,就产生了拣择心,也就是choice选择。比如,同一个经历,我分出好的和不好的,想留住好的,逃避坏的,这就是分别、拣择。此时的选择权只是自由的假相,实际上被分别心、拣择心束缚住了,其实好坏都是自己的投射,是分别心的强行切分,是一体两面;执着于好的同时,必然执住了坏。所以,需要觉察自己的分别、选择的欲望——那都是“有为”,在没有分别心、拣择心的无为状态下,进行觉察。

当觉察预设了方向、动机、恐惧,则狡黠的潜意识就开始把那动机与结果投影到心幕上,所觉察到的,就只是投影了。故云。

自由不是未来的目标,否则就是对当下心灵束缚的逃避和掩饰,就永远没有自由——因为当下的束缚已经被你洗白了(justified)。当下觉知,心下自由。

choiceless awareness,passive awareness,就是觉察自己的分别心、拣择心,从而达到“心无所住”的无为状态,此时心获得自由的觉察力。

Yes, everyone creates images for himself, and all images are merely masks, personas to make himself look differently, but without any true change under the masks. I don’t think this is a theory, actually this is a fact with almost everyone in both senses of outer and inner images.

Yes, such images act as a refuge for us, in which i can obtain a sense of security. Why do I desire for this sense of security? Obviously I create this mask, this refuge to cover up my inner fear. So it is not the images that bring about fear and hurt, on the contrary, it is the inner fear that create the desire for a glorying image so that i can obtain a sense of security, and benefit from it continuously.

I think Krishnamurti has talked tremendously on this topic, for example, an ideal is a self-projected image in the future. With an ideal in my outlook,  I will make efforts endlessly so that the ideal will come true at the end of this life or even in the next life. Obviously, ideal, the future image gives me so much self-pleasing, self-consoling that there is almost no need for me to face what I am at present directly, and I can postpone my transformation to the unknown future.

Yes, as most of us, I have established so many personas for self-protection, of course they are only means of postponement of understanding and changing. Fortunately K told us that to keep inner alertness and observe ourselves passively is the true meditation, and in true meditation true transformation will happen spontaneously.
