马小秋秋言物语2第五十九章:师道既尊,学风自善

听到一位学生家长忧虑地说,现在学生辱骂甚至动手打老师的事时有发生,如此下去,“师不师,生不生”,德才兼备的人才何以为继呢 ?

尊师重道,是中华民族的优良传统,在周代就崇尚释奠尊师之礼。儿童十岁时出门拜师求学,不论是进私塾,还是入学府,都要行拜师礼。反观现在,学生的嚣张越界、老师的退让失态,让师道尊严这一中华民族重要的伦理秩序显得苍白无力。经济的发展,让我们的办学条件越来越优越,而教育的本质与内涵却如被沙漠蚕食的绿洲一样,一点一点退化。

教书育人是非常高尚的工作,承载着国家和民族的未来与希望。现在我国处于一个转型的特殊时期,精神文明的发展没有跟上物质文明的发展,社会浮躁,戾气和势利喧嚣,功利思维和快餐文化成为主流,孩子们多少也会受到影响。整个社会需要正本清源,老师正是其中重要的一环。

想达成这个目标,就必须重树“师道尊严”,除了整个社会弘扬“尊师重道”的风气,关键还是要靠老师,“打铁还需自身硬”,培养良好的道德修养,储备丰富渊博的知识,挖掘自身的人格魅力。老师要用德行赢得尊重。教师这个特殊的职业,对从业者本人提出了严格的思想道德和职业道德要求。古人常说:“德高为师,学高为范。”

宋代学者李觏也曾经提出:“师者虽非人君之 位,心有人君 之德。”

可见,有德且德高方能为师。目前,师者最重要的是要做到不随波逐流,不见利忘“道”,不忘初心。老师要用爱赢得尊重。老师应该让自己充满爱,热爱工作,尽职尽责,不辞辛劳,精益求精。在教育上,不仅爱护那些品学兼优、遵守纪律的学生,也爱护落后孤僻、桀骜不驯的学生,对他们一视同仁,关怀备至,让爱如涓涓细流一般滋润他们、感化他们、引导他们。

老师要用渊博的知识赢得尊重。如果想给学生一桶知识之水,自己就必须成为奔腾浩瀚的江河;如果自己没有思想的火花,就无法点燃别人智慧的光焰;如果不能与时俱进,及时更新自己的知识储备,就很可能落伍于时代、落后于学生。

我们的“师道尊严”,是“师道”在先,“尊严”便是自然的结果。因为老师的师德、师尊、师职如何,学生内心也有一杆秤。正如孔子所言,“其身正,不令而从;其身不正,虽令不从”。不遵 “师道”而强求“尊严”,是本末倒置。

希望我们的校园中彬彬有礼、其乐融融、师道俨然、学生乐学的蔚然气象早日到来。

A Code of Conduct

Honoring teachers and respecting the art of teaching has been part of the fine traditions of China. Starting in the Zhou Dynasty, there was a certain etiquette for honoring teachers. When ten-year-old children began schooling, whether in private or public schools, they bowed to their teachers. Nowadays, students are becoming increasingly arrogant. Teachers can only respond with forbearance. A teacher’s aura of dignity, which is an important part of the ethical order of the Chinese nation, has withered and weakened. Because of our rapid economic growth, we enjoy a much- improved educational infrastructure; yet the process of education itself is being degraded, like an oasis gradually claimed by a relentless desert.o transmit knowledge and to cultivate character is a noble profession.

To transmit knowledge and to cultivate character is a noble profession. It is a vehicle for the future and the hope of this country. China stands at a special time of transformation. In these years of change, spiritual and cultural cultivation are falling victim to fast growth and a vast consumption of material goods. As a result, society has grown impatient and superficial. Hostility and vanity, snobbish behavior, shallow ideas, and a fast-food mentality have entered the mainstream, with an inevitable influence on our children. In the process of reforming society and regaining normality, the most important job falls to the teachers. They are the stable link to our sense of decorum and culture in this transitory period.

To avoid a debacle, a clearly definable code of a teacher’s dignity must be established—quickly. Teachers have an important role to play in what I now propose: a new Code of Conduct where teachers are honored and their teachings respected. As the ancients wrote: “People become teachers because of their profound knowledge and a desire to be an example of great virtue.” But according to the old saying, “It takes a good blacksmith to make good steel.” Our teachers must be themselves made of good steel, possessing sound moral standards, profound knowledge, and personal charisma. This is a profession that already has strict requirements for proper behavior and a strong work ethic. Li Gou, a scholar in the Song Dynasty said: “Teachers are not kings; yet they must have the virtue of a King”.

In this transitory age, the most important qualities in a teacher are being indifferent to the latest trends and keeping their original aspirations in sight. They should not disregard the Tao in pursuit of profit. In a Code of Conduct, teachers must display genuine enthusiasm for what they teach, and they must carry a sense of responsibility. They should praise not only students of fine character who excel, but also students who are obstinate and have fallen behind. Treat all students fairly, care for them equally, motivate them, and guide them.

If teachers do not possess a spark for ideas, they will never light the fire of wisdom in students. If they do not update their knowledge, they will fall behind the latest advances in their subject matter, and eventually, fall behind their own students. The key word is enablement. By enabling the conditions in which learning occurs, everyone gains. This mode of thinking requires the input and consent of everyone involved. Performing the duties of a teacher is paramount. Dignity will follow: it is the natural result of being an effective instructor. We all exercise an inner judgment related to our relationships. Using a set of inner scales, students weigh their teacher’s ethics, honor and work performance. As Confucius says, “When a ruler’s personal conduct is correct, his government is effective without giving orders; if his personal conduct is not correct, even though he may give orders, the orders will not be followed”. To stress dignity without adhering to the qualities of a teacher is putting the cart before the horse. It is not an automatic “bonus” that comes with the job if you are lazy or ineffective.

Let us hope that soon we will see schools turn into educational communities where people are polite and happy. Teachers will keep to their prescribed duties, and students will enjoy the learning experience and show respect for those who have chosen this difficult profession.
