HTML File Icon missing!

HTML File Icon missing!

HTML file icon is not displaying correctly.

Here's what I did

Installed Windows XP fresh.

Installed Adobe Creative Suite. (Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive!, Version Cue, Acrobat, In Design) - The Icon for HTML file is changed to Adobe GoLive! file type. (the one with star on it)

Installed Microsoft Office 2003 and Frontpage 2003.

The icon for HTML file is now missing.

I went into Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File types to manually assign the Icon to HTM/HTML type files. I selected HTM file and clicked on Advanced button, and there was the Change Icon button. When I click on the [Chang Icon] button, it says "Windows can not find the file %1" and prompts me to choose the program. Even after I choose Internet Explorer by browsing into the respective folder and choose the HTML document icon, the HTM files are still missing the Icon!

Looks like you could reproduce this by installing Golive! first and then install FrontPage 2003.

Is there a fix for this?

Run the System File Checker (it also checks IE components).

Start > Run > sfc /scannow

Have your system cd handy.

good luck,

Internet Explorer HTML File Icons Vanish After Installing Adobe GoLive 6.0
No matter what you try (using TweakUI, reassociating the files with Internet Explorer, changing the icon manually), the icon still seems stuck on the default Windows "no icon" icon. Annoying!

However, there is a fix! The problem has to do with changes that Adobe GoLive 6.0 make to the registry, in particular the persistant handler htmlfile for under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}

Under "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}\Old Icon\htmlfile\DefaultIcon" there is a reference to the Adobe GoLive 6.0 executable. Changing that to "(PATH)\iexplore.exe,1" (usually "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1" - remember not to include the quotes, just the string itself) fixes the problem immediately.

A tricky problem to fix ... I hope you find this useful too!

Thank you so much. The key was present also in my computer, but I never install GoLive. I figure it's distributed in some other Adobe product. Someone should tell this Adobe lords something.

While I do have Adobe Acrobat, it has never caused me to lose the .htm and .html association. However, something (I know not what.) else did.

I tried everything including making the suggested registry change. My problem was the string was double quoted. Once I removed those, I got my default icon back.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for finding that hack w2share!!! Worked great! I have been having the same problem for the last week, and no matter how I Googled it, I could not find a legit fix.

Thanks!

I just noticed that the same has happened to my .css files. Any idea where to change that in the registry?

I just developed the same prob (HTML icon missing) in the past two days. Registry had no default value set. Only thing I had changed was uploaded an IE6 update. The fix here worked a treat. Thanks everyone ... it was a small but annoying problem!! :)

Hi all,

I experienced the same problem (HTML files showing wrong icons) on my Win 2K computer. I resolved it by comparing some registry keys to the same ones on my (cleaner) Win 2K laptop... :)

Here's what worked for me:
- go to registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile
- if you see a subkey called ShellEx, delete it
- that's all

Remarks:
* if you don't see the subkey, then you should try something else (duh). This solved the problem on my pc
* of course, I recommend you first check the contents of the ShellEx key. If it doesn't seem all that important, go ahead and trash it. In my case, it contained a subkey called IconHandler, which in turn contained a string value of a non-existing CLSID. So maybe it will also suffice to just remove the IconHandler subkey.

Anyway, hope this helps some of you!

I tried using the regedit myself, but found it not working for me. So I played around with some settings on my computer and finally got fixed :) . So if your still having problems try this:

Go to Start -> Run
Type 'Explorer' and click OK
Goto TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS
Click on the FILE TYPES panel
Browse for the file type '.htm' (about 40% of the way down)
Click ADVANCED and on the next popup, click CHANGE ICON
Type the location to Internet Explorer on your machine (ex. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe)
You should now have Explorers icons in the space beneath. Clcik the second item in the first column
Do the same for the .html extension and your done

* Note I did this on XP so I don't know remember if the other OSs have the same layout in Folder Options to do what I did. If anything, things would probably be named differently.
* Another note: For IE shortcuts, you may need to log off on log back in for those to update themselves with the target or just delete the link and make a new link to the desktop or whereever you placed the icon (this is what I did)

Well I hope this helps!

I followed the steps and ended up with a generic Windows Icon for all HTML files. Better than having no icon, but still not resolving my problem of having the actual IE icon for those files. Help!
