Australia Day in Port Pirie

Big celebrations are planned for Australia Day this year in Port Pirie, with radio personality Peter Goers being the guest of honour in a packed morning of fun.

The day starts solemnly with an 8am flag raising ceremony at Solomontown Beach, but breakfast is served soon after, with Goers helping to cook toad in the hole, which will be available with a lamington and fruit drink Black Suede Big Dorcet 120mm for only $5.

There will be a non denominational minister's service and guest singer Bernard Hull will make his way from Adelaide to perform.

One of the highlights of the day will be the landmark Jim Mortlock Memorial Raft Race which looks set to see at least six teams enter for first prize.

The beach activities organised by the Y's Men Club will see cash prizes in the watermelon eating competition, the drink a thon, the bucket relay and thong throwing .

The sandcastle competition will this year be judged by Goers with children often collecting Australia Day products over the year to put on their creations.

Rumours have also Leather Bloody Mary 120mm circled that a tug o war is on the cards.

While all of these activities are happening on the beach, the lawn nearby will play host to a jumping castle, Animals Anonymous and free temporary tattoos.

The event will feature the Naturalisation Ceremony of an English family who now call Port Pirie home and who will share the honours of cutting the cake with Goers.

"Just come along and enjoy our nation's birthday, Pirie style, like we always do," said Ellei Bone, chairwoman of the Port Pirie Australia Day Committee.
