Free Online Lectures and Other Learning Resources

As you know, many colleges and universities now offer online courses for money. (See, for example, the comprehensive list of accredited institutions athttp://www.onlinecolleges.org.) Some, while not giving their credits or degrees away free, are offering course materials free. Typically they offer free streaming audio and/or video of class lectures. Some, such as MIT, also offer class notes, syllabi, and other useful written materials. Below is a sampling of some of the more popular current offerings and a few others that relate directly to wisdom. Top 10 Universities with Free Courses Onlineis a site that summarizes, and links to, offerings from UC Berkeley, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Utah State, Tufts, and other sources.

Open Cultureis an especially rich resource. They sift through cultural and educational media (podcasts, videos, online courses, etc.), then "highlight the good, jettison the bad, and centralize it in one place." They have an extensive podcast library (e.g., see theirUniversity Podcast Collection), andlinks to materials on creating your own podcasts.

Harvard Divinity School, Center for the Study of World Religions — Online lectures, some audio, some video.

Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government — Video Archive. A variety of presentations including commencement addresses.

Harvard University, Tal Ben-Shahar's Positive Psychology course. The most popular course ever at Harvard, with more than 800 students enrolled. Here you can watch videos of the course lectures.

MIT World. More than 500 online lectures in 22 topic areas.

MIT OpenCourseWare. MIT aims to "Provide free, searchable access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world." The school is making available free, course materials used in some 1800 courses. Included are syllabi, lecture notes, problem sets, lab materials, lecture videos, and more. Their site gets a million visitors a month from all over the world.

Internet Archive. A "library of Open Educational Resources and university lectures. This library contains hundreds of free courses, video lectures, and supplemental materials from universities in the United States and China."

Webcast Berkeley — Courses. Webcasts and podcasts of class lectures, not only of close 48 current courses, but also the archives of courses going as far back as 2001.

Webcast Berkeley — Events. Podcasts of visiting speakers, etc. Browse the 18 categories.

Nobelprize.org — Nobel Lectures. Information on Nobel Laureates going back to 1901, and since 1999, videos of the Nobel Lectures given by the winners.

University of San Diego — Ethics Updates. Many ethics related resources here, and the more than 300 video lectures on ethics-related topics will eventually be accessible once again..

Vedanta Archives. Audio and video lectures on Vedanta from the Vedanta Society of Southern California.
