同义辨异（4）

1.  made of  和  made from

这两个短语都表示 “用...材料制造”，

made of     只发生物理变化，还能看出原材料

made from  发生化学变化，已看不出原材料

例：

The tables are made of wood. (还能看出原料是木头)

Paper is made from wood.  (已看不出原料是木头)

The bridge is made of stone. （石桥，看得出是石头）

Bricks are made from clay. （砖是泥做的，看不出泥）

Wines are made from grapes. (红酒是葡萄做的)

2.  blond  和  blonde

这两个词读音相同：[blɒnd]

blond   金发碧眼的男人

blonde  金发碧眼的女人

但现在使用时已不再严格区别。

顺便学习另外两个词：

brunette 黑头发女人，深褐色头发女人

redhead   红头发的人 (尤指女人)

A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead all entered the finall competition of the beauty contest. 进入选美决赛

3. suspect  和  doubt

这两个词做动词，都表示 "说话人" 对表述的事情 “怀疑”，“不确定”， 但用法不同：

suspect  怀疑是真的  （sth bad may be true），通常怀疑某不好的事情是真的，

doubt    怀疑是假的 （sth may not be true or possible），怀疑某事的真实性，即怀疑是假的，

例句:

John suspected that the woman living next door was using heroin.  怀疑隔壁女人吸毒

I suspect there might be a gas leak somewhere.  怀疑煤气有泄漏

Police suspected that Robin had accomplices who had escaped.  怀疑有同伙在逃 

I doubt if he is honest.  我怀疑他是否诚实  

I doubt that he will come. 恐怕他不会来

He doubted if his brother would learn anything good from his friends.
