First, it introduces the protagonist an old man who went eighty-seven days without fish and then caught big ones every day for three weeks. But he has gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. So the boy's parents tell him to leave the old man. Even now he is alone, he never loss his hope and confidence.

开头部分先介绍主人公老人目前生活的环境及现状，本来又个男孩一直陪着他一起捕鱼，但由于老人四十几天都没捕到鱼，男孩被迫跟随其他人一起捕鱼，但老人没有失去信心，他坚信自己能补到鱼。
