But that did not really surpriseme much. I knew very well that in addition tothe great planets—such as the Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Venus—to which we have given names, there are also hundreds ofothers, some of which are sosmall thatone has a hard time seeingthem through the telescope. When an astronomerdiscovers one of these, he does notgive it a name, butonly a number. He might call it, for example, “Asteroid325.”
