6) The Germans got it right
We all know: the blueprint after the failure in Euro 2000, the investment in youth football, the partnership with the Bundesliga clubs. England were abject in Euro 2000 and the FA decided to resolve the problem by spending £5 million a year on whoever was the most attractive manager on the market, while the Premier League nonchalantly kept counting its cash. It’s become a cliché but that doesn’t make it any less true: the Germans actually attended to the grass roots of their game and, funnily enough, they produce excellent footballers and a national team of which to be proud.

Self-perceived age has the potential to change, so interventions may be possible. People who feel older than their real age could be targeted with health messages to promote positive health behaviors and attitudes towards aging. The good news is that you can change your feelings about your age. And other studies indicate that believing yourself to be younger can bring many benefits including a longer life. One recent study found that helping older people have positive feelings toward age by showing them positive word associations helped older adults improve in physical tasks, like balancing and getting up out of a chair, in as little as four weeks. Research in 2013 discovered that no matter what older people’s real mental capabilities are, their negative image of aging and forgetfulness can make them feel five years older.
The fact that perceived age can change makes preventive measures possible, and therefore individuals who feel older than their actual age could be provided with health tips to enhance their positive behaviors and attitudes about aging. Here is the good news: You can change your perception of how young you are; and other studies suggest that there could be other benefits to thinking yourself younger besides a longer life. One recent study found that communicating positive words to the participants and helping them to be optimistic about their age helped them improve their physical abilities such as balancing and getting up from a chair in a period of just four weeks. A 2013 study found that negative stereotypes of aging and poor memory can make older adults feel up to five years older regardless of their actual mental abilities.
