The deserter knows his life is forfeit if he is taken, so he will not flinch from any crime, no matter how vile.

         not flinch from (doing) something:不管一件事情多么困难或令人不快,也愿意去做。

*She flinched at the touch of his hand.

A ruler who hides behind paid executioners soon forgets what death is.

He sent his horse into a trot.

Jon said, kicking his horse forward.

主要是这个 sent...into a trot中send的用法很有意思。

To send someone or something into a particular state means to cause them to go into or be in that state.(Collins COBUILD)

Their decision sent him into a rage. (=Their decision made him very angry.)
